Music is my joy
singing erases bad moods
lifting the spirit

Cori MacNaughton

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/RmRng9v.png">

As the daughter of two pianists, to say that my family was into music would be a major understatement, as it was simply a large part of who we were.

Music has infused pretty much every day I've spent on this planet, in one way or another, and even when I am not physically listening to music, I am frequently regaling myself with a wonderful internal concert.

I once joked with my mother that I'd do fine in solitary confinement, because I'd simply spend my time replaying music in my mind, since I tend to live inside my head as it is. ;-)

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/RmRng9v.png">

So what does our lovely native Appalachian wild ginger (no relation to the tropical spice ginger) have to do with music?

Actually, quite a lot, for me at least, as hot beverages help to warm and loosen the vocal chords in preparation for singing. As an inveterate tea drinker, who loves all manner of herbal teas, this is one I indulge in from time to time.

Only a leaf or two is required for a very nice, light, and fragrant brew. Just place it in a teapot, or a Pyrex measuring cup, pour near-boiling water over the leaves, and steep for five minutes or a bit longer before enjoying. You can crush the leaves to release more flavor. I prefer mine unsweetened.

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/RmRng9v.png">

As I've related in previous posts, my mother was a classical pianist, and my father was a jazz pianist, and also a school teacher. Which, frankly, my mom probably should have been as well, as she was such a natural teacher. I've been told I am like her in that regard.

Between my parents, and my two older sisters, our ongoing family soundtrack was amazingly diverse, interesting, and more than occasionally hilarious. Both of my parents were into Broadway and London cast shows, some of which can be quite funny, and they were both into comedic musical albums as well, including everyone from the Smothers Brothers and Allen Sherman to Blossom Dearie and Tom Lehrer.

It was my father who brought Tom Lehrer into the mix, as he had Lehrer's first album when my parents met, and my mother promptly became a staunch fan. She made certain to acquire each of his albums as they were released.

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/RmRng9v.png">

For those who are unfamiliar with Lehrer's work, his first album came out when he was still an undergrad at Harvard, and performed there regularly during their talent shows. He later taught mathematics there, and at a number of other colleges and universities, and released a number of other largely topical, intelligent and hilarious albums over the years.

But far and away my mother's favorite song by Lehrer was "The Irish Ballad," from his first album, and she used to sing it to my sisters and me when we were children, a fact that horrified Marek when I first time him about it.

I can't imagine why . . . it is a simple little ditty about a lovely Irish girl who proceeds to kill each and every member of her family, only to be truthful when at last the police came by, "because lying she knew was a sin." And, hands down, it was one of our favorite songs growing up, because it is quite simply hilarious.

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/RmRng9v.png">

Then again, Marek later fell in love with "They Call Me the Wild Rose," from "Dig Cave Dig," the tribute album to Nick Cave featuring covers of many of his murder ballads, at which point I told him he had no more room to complain. ;-)

Unlike Allen Sherman, who adapted well-known songs and wrote new comic lyrics, Tom Lehrer wrote entirely original songs, had a nice singing voice, and was quite a good pianist.

And, because he was highly intelligent and an excellent observer of human nature, he often took his cues from the headlines of the day, meaning that the more you know about 1950s and 1960s pop culture and history, the funnier his songs are, even though many are black humor.

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/RmRng9v.png">

And the commentary leading up to each song is often as funny as the song itself. One of Lehrer's biggest fans was radio personality Dr. Demento, who started a syndicated show in Chicago which later moved to L.A., and he not only played Lehrer's songs on a regular basis, but became a close personal friend of his in later years.

I remember in the 1970s that my sister Carol and I would often listen to Dr. Demento, whose 3-hour show was on Saturdays, and we would be thrilled any time he played something by Lehrer, and/or any of the other musical comedy icons with whose music we were raised.

For those interested, here is Lehrer performing two versions of ["The Irish Ballad,"](https://singout.org/2014/04/07/murder-ballad-comedy-part-one-the-irish-ballad/) along with other commentary and a couple of video clips exploring why we find comic murder ballads funny.

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/RmRng9v.png">

I guarantee that you can find most, if not all of Lehrer's other songs on YouTube, or elsewhere on the web. And they are well worth seeking out, as there are few things that can blast away a bad mood better than singing along to an entirely politically inappropriate, but very funny, song. And to Lehrer, there were no sacred cows; he skewered government, religion, folk music, Boy Scouts, the druggist on the corner, and even his own university.

I inherited my dad's copies of the albums, and have purchases more myself, which I still dearly love. For the record, Weird Al Yankovic has frequently noted that Lehrer is/was one of his biggest influences. Which shows. ;-)

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/RmRng9v.png">

My sister and I also dearly loved, and used to sing together, the lovely ballad ["Down in the Willow Garden,"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrI-ySsm5OI) from Art Garfunkle's first solo album, "Angel Clare."

Like Lehrer, Garfunkle sung it straight, in harmony, and it is a truly lovely song, which could easily sucker anyone who didn't actually listen to the lyrics. Unlike "The Irish Ballad," "Down in the Willow Garden" is based on a traditional murder ballad from England and Ireland.

Our mom used to roll her eyes as we sang it to her, whereupon we reminded her that, as the the one who fostered a love for "The Irish Ballad" in us as children, she really had no valid complaint. And, naturally, her eye rolling was itself part of the joke, as she liked the song as much as we did, and she loved it when we sang together.

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/RmRng9v.png">

Finally, in parting, I leave you with my personal favorite of Lehrer's murder ballads, and one of my top five of all his songs, ["I Hold Your Hand in Mine."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjPhFSlhOuQ)

Please note that most of Lehrer's songs were NOT murder ballads, and he even wrote comic songs about hunting, politics, National Brotherhood Week, the nuclear arms race, mathematics and the Periodic Table of Elements; the latter of which he set to the tune of "The Modern Major General," from "The Pirates of Penzance," by Gilbert and Sullivan. ;-)

A clever, eclectic and well-rounded man, our Mr. Lehrer. ;-)

You're too much! Every post is packed so full of information, ideas, and fun anecdotes, I cannot even begin to respond. Every now and then, I'll see something we do NOT have in common. E.g., my dad got a free piano, and rather than pay for lessons for his five daughters, who attempted to play by ear or intuition but failed, he TORE APART the piano and hauled it out of the house.
And, LOL, here again we think alike: I am never bored because of the worlds inside my head, the fiction I imagine, or the stories I remember. You have songs to occupy your memory (*I'd do fine in solitary confinement, because I'd simply spend my time replaying music in my mind, since I tend to live inside my head as it is. ;-)* - but I have to confess, if put to the test, I might go mad pretty fast. Behind bars, with cement walls, in a small room? I'd rather be tossed into a cave in the woods and die sooner rather than later ...

LOL - I've put myself into "solitary" many times over the years.

I have always recognized -and honored - my need for alone time, even when friends and significant others haven't understood or honored the need.

So, while the deprivation of other people would be felt, on another level, I'd be fine with it, because for me, it is such familiar ground.

As I once told a close friend, a part of me wants to live in a remote lighthouse, where it's just me and the sea monster. And, as I said once in a poem, when the sea monster comes, I pray it finds the love it seeks. ;-)

Reference: "The Foghorn," by Ray Bradbury, which was my mothers all time favorite short story, and one of my top five. ;-)

Interestingly, the original name was "The Beast from Twenty Thousand Fathoms," but Bradbury hated the film adaptation so badly that he had his name removed from the film credits, and changed the name of his short story, so as not to be associated with the detested film. ;-)

I always loved Bradbury.

Wow, I love this reply (as always)! And I hope you fictionalize this: *a part of me wants to live in a remote lighthouse, where it's just me and the sea monster. And, as I said once in a poem, when the sea monster comes, I pray it finds the love it seeks. ;-)* - I love it!!
Solitude. I cherish it. For me, a cave, a cliff dwelling in a rocky canyon wall in desert country, with a spring nearby, with sun and wind as housekeepers, is my dream, but to be ALONE, I'd need lots of animal companions. That haiku about my spider and ladybug is a sign that I already spend too much time in isolation, seclusion, not inflicting myself on the society of other, and also walling myself from those "other" who find me to be an affliction. Chill, people. You are so rare, Cori, so forgiving, compassionate, and easy going, unlike a great number of people who are impatient and irate and obsessed with what's FAIR and what's coming to them and how dare anyone inconvenience them.... oh, and Ray Bradbury, I've got to read and re-read all the Bradbury!!!!

Like the rest of us.

Allen Sherman and Tom Lehrer, not to mention the Smothers Brothers and many others, were there first. And, to Weird Al's credit, he credits them all as influences, which is the mark of a respectful performer.

Which is another one of the reasons why I love him too. ;-)

Remember Allen Sherman? "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah (Here I Am at Camp Grenada)?"

Although he wrote the occasional original tune, such as "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah," by far the majority of his work was the 50s and 60s version of what Weird Al would begin in the 70s, following in Sherman's large and storied footsteps. He was hugely popular in his day, especially in our house, and among my parents and their friends.

A few of the many reasons why I love him are found [here,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBf4oe3UA4s), [here,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLPObMbkNMA), and [here,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6hxcItsHDw).

He was also the one who came up with the brilliant and cutting adaptation of Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," turning it on its ear as "Peter and the Commissar," which was a brilliant and hilarious takedown of Communist USSR.

On Side 2 of that same album, which was recorded with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, there is the inimitable "Variations on 'How Dry I Am,'" which first showcases the beginnings of numerous classical and popular tunes that begin with the same four notes, followed by even more pieces that begin with those four notes reversed. And, at a pivotal moment, Arthur Fiedler himself provides the hiccup. ;-)

Sherman skewered so many popular standards that he ruined them for my family, because as the first few bars played, we'd already be laughing, remembering his altered lyrics. Too bad for anyone singing them straight. ;-)

And then of course there were the Smothers Brothers, whose gentle and hilarious brand of comedy gave way to biting wit and satire, and ultimately got their popular show canceled, when they starting telling too much truth to power on national TV.

But I'll save that for another day.

@crescendoofpeace ·
Thanks, @c0ff33a.

As I've joked before, I'm probably the only poet who nearly always accompanies my seventeen syllable haiku with a thousand to fifteen hundred words of context and commentary. ;-)

I'm generally given to making longer than average posts, though it's not set in granite. I do try to always make them informative and interesting.

I have a great deal of respect for that, and you definitely hit the mark with both informative and interesting. I'm on my third read through of this one and still discovering new pieces I missed. So wonderful and a real inspiration to people writing on Steemit.

@tessaragabrielle ·
I love Tom Lehrer, and grew up listening to his work as well. It's so hard to pick just one favorite of his songs! I love Lobachevsky, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, the Masochism Tango, Oedipus Rex, Clementine, Smut, Who's Next... Wow, this might say something concerning about my childhood.

I also really love Arlo Guthrie's *Alice's Restaurant* and Weird Al Yankovic's music. Now I'm listening to a bunch of Tom Lehrer's music on Spotifyβ€”thanks for the reminder!

Yay, I'm not the only one with a weird and twisted (and funny) childhood! And I'm right there with you - I love every one of the songs you mentioned.

I'm also a huge fan of Arlo Guthrie, and Alice's Restaurant was a Thanksgiving tradition for years, though I love a lot of his straight music as well. ;)

And Weird Al is just Weird Al - completely irreverent and hilarious. ;-)

@tezmel ·
Damn! Longest post ever :D I enjoyed my read though... I love music. No. I am alive because of music. Music is my life. I don't play or anything but it has been what no-one can ever be, wired me back together and healed me.

From being an orphan at 15 and a mother to my sisters the same day, to domestic abuse, to my kind of solitary ( a whole year in the largest women correctional facility in East Africa), to the bold woman I am today :) Music did that... Music and Kenyan tea :)

I don't relate to your kind of Music but I know the love of it is infectious and global. Thank you so much for sharing :)

@crescendoofpeace ·
Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

And yeah, I am given to writing longer posts LOL, but that's just a part of me. Some will be more concise, but when I am passionate about something, I just keep going on about it. ;-)

As for "my kind of music," that's a pretty wide ranging and eclectic mix. I have posted about a lot of different styles of music on Steemit alone, not to mention elsewhere on the web over the years. And I will continue to do so.

As for the healing power of music, I completely concur, which was one of the reasons for this post. I was feeling particularly down, and trying to get my head straight again, which is what brought me to musical comedy: laughter is the best medicine, as they say, and what better than having it set to music? ;-)

Sorry for your past ordeals, and mine, but in the end, it is what made us the people we are, and I for one wouldn't trade that.

You and I come from a long line of survivors. It is up to us to pass that mindset along to the next generation, and the next.

STEEM on, my friend. Thanks for being you.
