Mak and Colleagues (2017) looked into the long-term effects of physical exercise in people with Parkinson Disease. They look at exercise induced neuroplasticity, at the possible risks and adverse effects of exercise and they also suggest recommendations for new treatments. 

As per the researchers:

_"Evidence suggests that a minimum of 4 weeks of gait training or 8 weeks of balance training can have positive effects that persist for 3–12 months after treatment completion."_ [Mak et al. (2017)]

The types of exercise they look into, which should be done for at least 12 weeks and can produce long-term benefits, are:

- strength training
- aerobic training
- dance therapy
- and tai chi. 

The type of exercise that has the longest carry-over effect is balance training. Gait and tai chi are the next best effective:

_"Balance training improves balance, gait and mobility, and reduces falls for up to 12 months after completion of treatment. Gait training is effective for the improvement of gait performance and walking capacity up to 6 months after training completion._

_Tai chi reduces falls for up to 6 months after treatment has ended. Most progressive resistive training and aerobic training programmes yield positive effects that last for 12 weeks."_ [Mak et al. (2017)]

This review is quite lengthy and it's a good read for those interested in the subject. Researchers suggest new approaches and research directions that should further advance the field.
