Oopsie! - Tangled Yarn 😫
Yeah...so ya know...that beautiful yarn I just showed you in [Knitting with Lace Weight Yarn](https://steemit.com/knitting/@crosheille/knitting-with-lace-weight-yarn)? Well this IS that yarn. 😕

This is my first purchase of hand-dyed yarn and it comes wrapped in a special way...it’s called a Hank. It’s tied in three places with little pieces of the yarn. Two of the ties just come straight off once the knot is out but the other one is actually connected to the starting piece.

So before I knew all this, I took off the tag and layed out the yarn in an oval shape wondering how to find my starting piece. Being me, ~~overly precise and persistent~~ I decided to research the best way to find that piece to unravel the yarn into a ball.
I found this helpful video on YouTube...

https://youtu.be/1nc8fEvv-3M

I started out just fine until I had to start moving some pieces out of my way to keep rolling the yarn into a ball. My mistake was not detangling as I went. Instead of taking my time to make sure I go through and under the yarn I just moved pieces out of my way because it *seemed* to be working.

![97AC8041-B4B3-4339-B7AF-548CD34F0B7D.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZxYbvTrWHHjGSvKiHUTWifoErKQB1E8CiWJCcR3XZk2L/97AC8041-B4B3-4339-B7AF-548CD34F0B7D.jpeg)

So now I have this big tangled mess and can’t even enjoy this yarn until it’s in a ball. So we’ll see if I get to show you some of my lace scarf process by Monday...urgggghhhhh. 😖🥺

Just thought I’d share with you all in case you haven’t had the pleasure of getting into this mess yet. Hopefully you can prevent it. If anyone knows a better way please let me know because I do plan to buy more hand-dyed yarns.

Ouch - that does look awful! But believe me, untangling it is not that difficult if you do it slowly. Don't try to do everything at once :)

But I wouldn't advise to have the lying in the round like in the video. You remember the pictures of old with people holding the hank on their upright hands? There's a reason people did that - it keeps the yarn from tangling (perfect use for some free child labor...) And secondly I wouldn't advise to roll yarn into a ball just that way, it tends to have too much tension on the yarn. It helps if you put a finger on the ball and wind the yarn around ball and finger, remove the finger if you want to wind in a different direction around the ball and put it on the ball again. This way the yarn is wound without tension.

I'd try to make a center pull cake-type ball. Look for videos about using a nostepinne (yes, strange word - don't ask me which language that is). You don't have to buy a piece of wood for a ridiculous amount of money - take a look around your house. And old chair leg, a broom stick... if it isn't smooth, put some clingwrap around it. It helps if it gets thinner at one end, but isn't necessary.

And... well... with lace weight yarn I'd ask in the shop whether they could wind it for me. I'm lazy and have no patience ;)

Yes it is very awful. I had no idea it would take me days to untangle :(

I can’t say I remember seeing any pictures of people holding the Hank in their hands. Wish I would have known that. Oh darn wish I would have known about the tension thing too. That makes sense though. However with it being so matted together I need both of my hands to untwist them. I wouldn’t be able to do so with my fingers in the ball.

Aghhhhh! Why didn’t I think of that? I was just so happy to get my yarn I literally left the shop skipping lol. I didn’t think to ask them to wind it for me. Next time I physically buy yarn from a shop I will definitely ask them to do it . I’ll just take my time and do it slowly this round.

Thanks for sharing all of these tips and tricks ~

OHNOOOOOOOO I hope you already found a solution. This is so awful. And it also happened to me 😱😱😱😂 The first time I bought a skein I did not knew how to wind it into a cake or ball and I nearly destroyed the lovely yarn.
I saw that @muscara already gave you some really helpful tips.
I helped myself with the back of a chair (to simulate the additional two hands) this worked ok but not really good. I now share a Haspel (i think its called yarn umbrella?) and a plastic yarn cake winder (The latter is very cheap on ebay) with Silvia. Both are amazing, you can use them for fast unraveling or for winding yarn cakes from skeins. We need them for the wool dyeing.

Yes this is so awful and it is still in a tangled mess. I wasn’t able to get to it much over the holidays.

Oh cool thank you so much for that product tip!
