I was watching a documentary last night how the aviation industry is changing and why the planes we fly in today are getting smaller and not bigger. This didn't make any sense and started looking up what were the reasons behind this. There are more passengers flying today than there were 10 years ago and it will only increase.

Some experts call it the dumbest plane ever built as the market was heading in the opposite direction when Airbus started. The A380 had it's first flight in 2007 which is only 12 years ago and is still a new plane yet it is outdated already. They projected having planned for 1500 A380's in the sky and their total will finish at 251 when they shut the plant down in 2021.This is well short of their target and is out by over 500 percent costing the tax payers of Europe plenty of money as this is in the EU and funded by all it's members.

When plans for the A380 were being first discussed only a few twin engine planes were crossing the Atlantic. Before this the Civil Aviation Authority had safety measures in place and twin engine passenger planes were not allowed to fly over large bodies of water. Safety meaures were put in place so if a plane lost the use of one engine they had a strict timeline of 90 minutes to land at the closest possible airport using the remaining engine. Today that rule has been tossed away and most Atlantic crossings are done on twin engine planes now.

Two Singapore airline jets being stripped for parts.

The current number of A380's stands at 234 currently and 17 more are being built and that will be it. Emirates which works totally differently to other airlines and has nearly half the total of A380's built. They use a hub flying everyone around the world to their base and then sending them out from there. They are the only ones doing this business model as others favor smaller planes flying directly between destinations.

The truth is over the last 20 years the engines are becoming more fuel efficient due to technological advancements and more reliable. The days of four engine aircraft are numbered and even though this model is still fairly new it is already a dinosaur.
![Emirates-replaces-the-A380-with-orders-for-the-A330-and-A350.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmcGx9mnGx4hWWHQWZ8Zr5GX8BpHBzvTrpqgua4woM8gKc)

Who would have thought that such a majestic beast that was unveiled as the game changer in 2007 would end up costing everyone a fortune and bowing out this way. Airbus have already rapidly changed course and are building the smaller A330 and A350 models. They already have just under 7600 aircraft orders on their books so it is not all doom and gloom.

The reasons behind the ending of the A380 program are down to airlines putting passenger choice in front of efficiency and environmental concerns, especially the American Airlines. As an example, AA fly 10 non-stop flights a day between JFK and LAX using A321 with a 187 seat, 2 class configuration which is 1870 seats, this could be achieved using just 3, A380s but of course, you would have less choice of the exact time you wanted to fly.
There would however be fewer crew costs, less congested airspace, fewer emissions and fuel burn. Capital expenditure would be slightly higher, a321 comes in at 114m list and an A380 at 448m list.

Planes are getting smaller and slower, Emirates is struggling to fill theirs hence them no longer requiring such large quantities.

As always, passengers, customers who want more choice are dictating the business model but I am also sure there were political reasons too for the A380's demise, as there was with Concorde! The US doesn't like it when someone else is bigger or faster!!

As you say, Airbus will survive this. Generally, Airlines do whats best for themselves without prejudice to their national aircraft manufacturer and its its such a global business now in any case. Airbus have final assembly plants in the US and China as well as Europe, a huge percentage of Boeing parts are manufactured outside of the US so it truly is a global industry.

Still sad for the A380 though. It is the smoothest, most spacious and most comfortable bird in the sky........

I think we need to see more restrictions on airlines to force them to be more efficient as demand for travel just keeps growing. Flying is artificially cheap as they are not being penalised for the damage they do. It's crazy that I can get a flight across Europe for less than a train into London. I've done a fair bit of flying, but I'm minded to reduce it.

Absolutely agree, at non discounted prices a return from Leeds to London is £200 but I pay around £80 in advance to get half decent timed services but my flights to Bangkok are just £700 same day walk on or in reality in advance, rarely over £500 return. I can never grasp the economic model other than business and 1st class passengers pay huge amounts.
But the environmental impact from air travel is huge and the plane sizes are decreasing and the flight frequencies increasing and the cost per km over any other form of motorised transport is tiny.
The airline's really need to be taken to task over their environmental impact but that's so difficult when many are government owned national carriers.

I could be wrong, but I think that they can fly much farther on just one engine now than they used to be able to. They definitely aren't getting any bigger as you say. Take a look at some of the advertising material from the early days of aviation and it is a huge difference! They had so much space back then!
