Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege game review, Tactical Breach Edition.
I got into Rainbow Six Siege a bit late, i played it during the open beta but wasn't too impressed with it, a year or so went by and i decided to pick it up again, i'm not entirely sure why but the game resonated with me on a whole different level the second time, possibly the best version of the Tom Clancy game world rainbow six packs amazing game play in with tactical team action, great levels and badass operators to make up the world of Rainbow Six Siege.

So barricade the window and load your LMG as we dive into the Rainbow Six Siege review.

# Setting
https://uccexpress.ie/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/gnhd9nzetuxy.jpg
Rainbow Six Siege takes place a few years after the rainbow program has been deactivated, the lore isn't entirely important to what the game is but it sets a nice scene, unknown terrorists begin to attack places across the world leading to the reformation of the Rainbow Program this takes Operators from all over the world and puts them under the purview of a central command structure that is employed globally and is given one objective, to kill the enemy leader.

Now this of course never comes to fruition in the game as it is mostly multiplayer, but it sets up why exactly you'll be going to specific levels and fighting with other players to secure or destroy objectives, as this is a multiplayer game it's impossible to give you a general overview of the places you'll be going to and what exactly you will be doing so i'll mainly be covering that in Game play.

However, the setting will always be the same, 5 Counter terrorists vs 5 "Terrorists" with different objectives and different paths to victory, as this is a tactical game however, simply entering through the front door is out of the question and a great way to fall victim to various operators traps and tactics.

# Game Play Overview

Rainbow Six Siege is, above everything, a tactical military game, you'll take control of individual operators with a different set of weapons and skill that can make or break the game depending on the map and the skill of your opponents, i often say to friends who pick up the game that great aim is only 40% of the game, which seems strange for a first person shooter, but you'll understand why soon enough.

The game play switches from extremely tactical and methodical to insane action and intensity at the drop of a hat and can switch right back again, as nearly everything in the game is destructible new pathways can open or shut instantly changing the landscape of the map for better or for worse depending on what side you're on, for example.

On the level Presidential, you are tasked with either defending or attacking a plane, defenders have a small window to set up their defenses the best they can based on their operators abilities and then a 2-4 minute match ensues which can have numerous twists and turns and can end with a clean surgical strike or end up in a bloodbath depending on what happens during those 4 minutes, either way it's addictive and fun game play that has literally hundreds of hours of replayability, but the biggest draw to the game is the operators that make up the Rainbow Six world.

# Operators

Tom clancy has a rich history with the Rainbow Franchise and as such numerous characters from the books and previous games make their return for you to use, as it stood when the game was first released you could use operators from factions that include, GIGN a french counter terrorist unit, SAS, the worlds most elite special forces hailing from england, The FBI, Americas own anti terrorist and siege experts and The Russian Spetsnaz, rumor to be the most deadly counter terrorist unit in history and the GSG 9, a highly renowned German Counter terrorist unit.

As time has progressed however the updates in the form of Operations have released numerous other Operators and factions including, JTF2 - Canadian Special forces, Navy Seals - American naval special forces, BOPE - Brazilian counter insurgency, SAT, Japanese special tactics, GEO - Spanish counter terrorists and very recently SDU, Chinese Elite paramilitary and GROM - Polish Anti terrorism forces.

All of these are playable within the game and come equipped with the weapons they use in real life, as well as having numerous special devices, tactics and operators, as it stands there are 31 unique operators with differing abilities and weapons that add to the game, usually, most factions will have two operators that are attack and 2 that are defense they will usually work in synergy with each other but as the game play is blind when it comes to choosing one squad can over power another squad if the team doesn't work properly together.

Most operators devices and special abilities will always be used for attacking or defend, for example Montagne, a GIGN operator has a full body covering riot shield that can absorb an indefinite amount of bullets, finding him in a hallway means you're going to have to back out of the room and try and flank him, might seem a little bit overpowered right? well if you play your cards right and you have Kapkan on your team you can bait Montagne into an EDD or Entry Denial Device that are placed on windows and doors that when tripped will explode and kill the person that triggered it, this is a very small example between 2 operators and the implication of interacting with 31 different ones is impossible to calculate.

# Tactical Game Play.

This isn't a game for people that are expecting Call of Duty like FPS, this is a tactical and methodical game that punishes people for rushing in, defenders will use things like wall barricades to stop errant breaching charges destroying their defense and based on your teams level of communication can even goat an entire attacking side into a kill zone, on the other hand if defends play too conservatively they might not have enough time to react when 5 attackers are stacked outside the room ready to breach in, this is the essence of Rainbow six, play smart but always be ready.

I can't remember who said it but the quote "The game is like overwatch for military nerds" is kind of true, take every action movie cliche you can think of and it's in this game but what really makes this game one of a kind truly is the operators, their unique abilities can completely change the landscape of a game in a matter of seconds, lets take the example above i gave you.

Lets say there are 2 defenders and 1 is holed up in a room waiting for an attack, 5 attackers are outside the room ready to breach in, it seems almost impossible for the defenders to win based on the numbers, well the second defender is Caveira, the Brazilian defender whose special abilities are to move completely silently and to interrogate downed enemies to reveal their friends position, as the damage is relatively realistic in Rainbow six, getting behind someone with their back exposed is almost a certain death and with caveira's silent step ability yo can maneuver around the map silently to get behind them and kill an entire team with one magazine.

This is of course just one example of one operator being able to control an entire match, there are 31 in total and all of them have special abilities that completely change the landscape of the match if done correctly, it would turn into a 20 page article if i listed them all with examples, but thankfully there's YouTube for that!

The overarching theme of Rainbow Six Siege is tactical expertise, if you treat this game like any other FPS you're going to get destroyed very quickly, i have had friends who are extremely good at every other FPS game come into Rainbow Six and get completely worked over in a matter of seconds in some rounds as positioning, teamwork and strategy are the tools you need to survive here, like i said, only about 30% of this game is being a good shooter, the other 70% is understanding the flow of battle and predicting enemy movement's.

# Graphics

Graphically Rainbow Six Siege is beautiful, coupled with the militaristic nature of the game and the destructible environment it's always a great looking game even when everything around you is destroyed, it runs smoothly however some users like myself who use 7.1 may be a little thrown off by the sound in the game as it doesn't replicate the other 2 channels faithfully and can lead you to thinking an enemies above you when really he's outside(yes really).

Again with graphics, it's easy to write page after page about what they look like, but it's just easier to show you.

# Critical Review

Rainbow Six Siege is a game that stands out in its own genre, with every patch and new operator something new is added to the game that requires you to pay attention to their abilities an adjust your game play accordingly and as such requires you to also know the operators on the other side, just being really good at your class is not enough to secure victory and even the operators with the best abilities can be subverted by someone else.

Currently the game is in year 2 of it's cycle and shows no signs of slowing down a recent huge patch dedicated to fixing the existing problems(Operation Health) gave new life to the game and 3 new operators were just introduced, (I love you Ela) and at the moment it's going for the extremely low price of $15 on steam, i have 348 hours played in Rainbow Six and I bought the game for $39, so getting this game for $15 is a god damn steal given how much content there is an how much you can just keep playing this game.

There are a few hitches every now and then at the moment we're experiencing the "castle bug" and the "peekers advantage" in the netcode can get to you sometimes, but overall mechanically the game is extremely solid and will deliver very familiar game play time and time again.

I usually don't personally endorse a game because of my subjective experience but i'd probably suggest this to anyone who enjoys more tactical and thoughtful FPS games especially at such a small price tag, Rainbow six is a game that will you literally hundreds of hours of enjoyment and on a personal note, the memes are amazing once you get into the game.
