There are pretty much three important aspects of the conditions of your home that are mostly responsible for the comfort - temperature, humidity and air quality. When even one of these is out of the balanced level you may feel discomfort, but when more than one is, then things may be really bad. During the winter usually temperature is not a problem as we use different kinds of heating to keep it at a comfortable level, but because of the heating the other two may suffer. Dry air is normal during the winter time because of the heating you use and higher concentration of dust particles or carbon dioxide can also become an issue if you don't have a ventilation system or don't open the windows often to let some fresh air in.

Opening the windows during the winter to let some fresh air in can present a different issue, namely reducing even further the already low humidity you may have as a result of the heating you use to keep things at a comfortable temperature inside your home. Balancing the temperature, humidity and air quality seems even harder now, so how do you achieve a good balance to ensure a comfortable home environment during the winter?

There are these things that are called humidifiers that are intended to help you keep the level of humidity at home at the most comfortable level between about 45% and 55%. Even when your heating or ventilation try to keep the air very dry, a humidifier can counter the negative effects and disperse fine water particles in the air to keep it moist.

Most humidifiers rely on ultrasonic technology to turn the water into cold mist that quickly disperses around raising the humidity and an active sensor keeps track of the level of humidity to turn on and off the device, so that the optimal or user desired level can be maintained. Ultrasonic cool humidifiers are the most energy efficient and quick to cover larger areas, there are some devices that can output hot/warm mist as well, but that means the water needs to be heated first and that means slower initial operation, more energy used and often less area coverage... not to mention they are also more expensive.
