To maintain any proof of work blockchain 51% of the network must be operating honestly so that it can stay immutable. The founder of Bitcoin stated that as long as 51% of the network was honest then no one would be able to double spend.

 With the proliferation of ASICS a 51% attack has become possible for anyone or any group of people to organize an attack against the network. 

Ethereum Classic core values of immutability are the same as Bitcoins. ETC refused to fork when the founder choose to betray the ideals of crypto but these ideals have failed to protect the currency from attack. 

 It appears that once this is resolved Coinbase will reactivate Ethereum Classic trading. They will release more information about the attack once they have more information on the attack.
