There is something mysteriously elusive about this one, with all its rich portayals of moment. Maybe because of above mentioned dust? Maybe because fogginess of landscape exactly? Upvoting!

Thank you for this tale of the matron @d-pend. 

Her wisdom stands unshaken by the wreckage  below. Her pearls and gems are guarded by a flowing sash that fools will never know.

A six sided cult rises up from the mud...
> to devour the uncertain loam:
printing minerals into a matchbook
filled with gunpowder,
pollen, and parchment.

She has life and power in her words contained in the scrolls.
The life is from the pollen that bubbles into the sky and written by the lilies.

Now in her wise stature I see her standing on the summit. Her words penetrate through the haze like a shining light.
> To the discerning all of them are right;
    they are upright to those who have found knowledge.
 Choose my instruction instead of silver,
    knowledge rather than choice gold,
 for wisdom is more precious than rubies,
    and nothing you desire can compare with her.

When we look at the title we know this is not a shallow poem of complacency. 
"Smoke on the South Wind" is a very intentional title. I don't think you are trying to describe Moana.

> The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here.

I feel that the poem speaks of the burning of the earth as the intentional practice carried out by man, for the renewal of it.

> a void of ashes
begging to be filled.

That smoke that rises to heaven is empty because it has no life, but the death that fire means, will bring new life, resurgence, rebirth, according to human knowledge.

> Mind of the landscape fogged,
its ambiguities set aflame
by the altars
of wild hearths springing up across its body.

From afar, the burning of the green, it seems a beautiful sight, but it represents the loss of the home of many species that live in the hills populated with exuberant vegetation.
Mother Earth suffers from this ancestral practice that melts and changes the natural elements: the sky, the earth, the water, the air, the trees. Therefore, it is revealed that:

> a sash of grey worn by the matron
to protect her blazing gems

> Change smelted in the skies,
written in blurry evanescence
and scribed by lilies.

And it ends, with an invitation to put yourself in the place of the landscape
natural for a moment, to feel first hand what the earth feels when it is burned.

> Stand on the summit; [...]
Then with a blink, a nod,
and a knowing gaze,
tell us what she says

Excellent empathic poetry that carries a message of awareness about the destruction of natural landscapes.

It is as if the poetry spoke of the fire burning the history and memories of many places or at least that is what I think, anyway is a beautiful poetry :)

Strange, isn't it?. Anything that infers that we've *"disappointed Mother Nature"* strikes a chord. Some deep down primeval instinct. 

When we give her *agency,* and hence the power to judge ... we're afraid of her judgement. We ate from the Tree of Knowledge and now we feel naked and ashamed ... because we know we're guilty.

This was the segment I kept coming back to ... we use Nature *(to make the matches)* to destroy Nature *(that start the fire).*
