A few weeks ago I posted a video of planting onion and leek seeds. I kept them in a warm location with the lid on the Jiffy planter to retain moisture. About a week later they sprouted. Once sprouted, I moved them to a sunny windowsill during the daytime, moving them back to a warmer location at night. .jpg) Germination was good for both the Spanish Sweet Onions (photo) and American Flag Leeks. Since it is now officially Spring here in central NY State, I have been waiting for the weather to break. Winter like weather has continued with a storm Friday night that left 4 inches of the white stuff. Today, however, it was in the 40s with sun, so I brought out my porch greenhouse. I have been using a small greenhouse for quite a few years now. They work especially well when the temps are in the high 30s or higher. Since we get a lot of wind at our location at 1500 feet elevation, the plastic cover protects the plants from wind. Even if the temps are in the higher 30s or low 40s, if it is sunny the green house temperature will be quite favorable. Of course, if the temperatures dip below freezing at night, I will bring the plants inside. This cycle will continue until nighttime temps remain above freezing. As the peppers and tomatoes sprout, they will also be moved to the greenhouse. Stay tuned for updates. .jpg) .jpg) .jpg)
