The CCID Research Institute of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China publish its recent global public-chain evaluation index ranking Steem the #2 blockchain in the world following just behind Ethereum that managed to get a much better Application level and Innovation/ Creativity level score. In fact Steem received one of the highest Technology level score in the ranking.

Base on the criteria used in the ranking, Steem only bumper seem to be its application level.  Its graphene base blockchain makeup was well received as it received one of the highest ranking. With the number of dapps built on the Steem blockchain one would have hope for a better application level score. Probably with the implementation of Smart Media Tokens and Communities, we can see a higher application score. As dapps like Dtude, Dlive, Dsound gaining greater traction in the coming weeks this should help the overall Steem blockchain appeal. 

For the Bitcoin maximalist it was a disappointing report as Bitcoin was tied with Verge for the 13 spot. Bitcoin biggest blow came from the Technology level as it only manage to get a score of 39.4 but manage to get one of the highest Innovation/ Creativity level score of 35.6. Its arch rival Bitcoin Cash did not make it into the top 15. Base on the Technological ranking, the graphene base architecture was well received, with Steem getting 82.6 and Bitshares getting 71.6, taking 1 and 3 respectively in the Technological level ranking.

_So what does this ranking mean for Steem?_

Steem is highly regarded among the Chinese official and could help with favorable regulation toward the cryptocurrency. I also believe China would soon open the gates to cryptocurrency and that would be favorable towards Steem as exchanges would readily open business to Steem. For China, its a matter of "control" once they believe they can control and effective monetize the ecosystem they would gradually open the doors again. Once that time comes around Steem should see healthy volumes coming from China.

For general sentiment around Reddit and other social media, the report was not well received base on the ranking of Bitcoin especially being tied with Verge. That was a smack in the face for cryptocurrency enthusiast who rather see a much higher ranking. Generally speaking the Steem ranking was received but Steem model received some harsh comments stemming from its distribution and manner of voting taking place on the platform. Steem initial days still seem to hurt it and its distribution continues to hurt its outlook. In one of the thread one contributor was pointing out the continuous trend where each rally is greeted with sellers and Steem struggle to maintain a BTC value compared with other cryptocurrency. Its 24hr trading volume is also pitiful and traders from Upbit has grown frustrated with the price action of both Steem and SBD. These are just the only worthy negative notes but from a technological standpoint, everyone is in full praise. 

Steem recently cross a major milestone, 1 million registered accounts, this publication and its 1 million milestone should help with positive sentiment towards the project. Trading volumes definitely has to improve and go much higher, preferably around the 200 million USD 24hr mark or higher. Its current volume won't make the cut off mark for large volume traders. Nonetheless, Steem remains the only project where new users can easily learn and earn some cryptocurrency. It probably is the only project that has brought new users to cryptocurrency ecosystem and that certainly should not go unnoticed. Who knows, from its 1 million registered accounts, it would have catch 20 thousands new cryptocurrency users and that's a special achievement. Should Steem continue to grow from strength to strength, it would be vital part of the on-boarding process into the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
