DIY (Bio fertilizer)
Hi there friends,

Here we have 100% an organic way of making your very own real bio fertilizer. Reason enough to make your hands dirty and to spoil your weed plants with your homemade plant food.

Do you garden with little money? Would you like to use natural methods? Are you worried about the environment? Would you rather not buy mineral fertilizers for growing cannabis? There are many good reasons for creating your own fertilizers. This contribution is offered to you by the letters N, P and K, or nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, because weed plants love it!

N-P-K, the ABC of plant nutrition
Like all plants, weed plants need nutrients to grow. But when you start making organic plant food yourself, you actually feed the earth and not the plants themselves. Earth contains a complicated miniature ecosystem consisting of microbes, which act as a digestive system for the plants. They break down organic material into fertilizers that can absorb the roots and thereby give the plant the building blocks it needs to grow healthily. The most important nutrients for cannabis plants are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

These three essential nutrients are simply indicated by their initials. N stands for nitrogen, P for phosphorus and K for potassium. Wait a minute, N stands for nitrogen and P for phosphorus? Are we high? No, N is the abbreviation for nitrogenium and P is the abbreviation for phosphorus, the Neo-Latin names of nitrogen and phosphorus respectively. The three numbers on the commercial fertilizer packaging refer to the ratio of N, P and K, and always in that order. The ratio is important because cannabis plants require different proportions of these fertilizers depending on the phase of their life cycle.

When do you use which fertilizer?
During the vegetative phase (growth phase) a cannabis plant needs a lot of nitrogen; that is necessary to produce many healthy leaves and stems. In the growth phase, a weed plant also uses an average amount of phosphorus, which is necessary for a good root system. This feeding schedule must also be maintained during the first few flowering weeks to bridge the stretching period. During this period the plant needs extra nitrogen because it also grows extra fast.

Phosphorus generally increases the number of buds, while potassium increases the size and weight of the buds

Only when flowering has really begun should the amount of nitrogen be kept low and the amount of phosphorus should be increased. Phosphorus provides many buds and stimulates flowering. Potassium is needed in every phase and especially during the flowering period, the plant needs a large amount of potassium. This should preferably be twice as high as the amount of nitrogen during the flowering phase. In general, phosphorus increases the number of buds, while potassium increases the size and weight of the buds.

Make your own N-P-K
It is of course the easiest for a starting grower to buy a few bottles of cannabis fertilizer: growth food for the vegetative phase and flowering food for the flowering period. However, there are several reasons why this may not be possible or desirable. Fortunately there are good alternatives for people who want to try to make their own fertilizers.

Natural sources of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium can be surprisingly close to home, in the form of kitchen waste and even your own urine! Below is a list of house, garden and kitchen resources for plant nutrition and which minerals they contain. Solids work best when you cut them into small pieces and dig them into the moist soil before planting seedlings or when repotting them in a larger pot. A liquid can be diluted with water and used as liquid manure.

Beginner's guide to home-made fertilizer

1. Coffee grits
Coffee grounds (coffee grounds) are rich in nitrogen and also contain a lot of potassium and phosphorus, so this is one of the easiest ways to fertilize your plants during the vegetative phase.

2. Banana peels
These contain a lot of phosphorus and potassium and are therefore useful for the flowering period. They also contain calcium and other minerals that are good for cannabis plants.

3. Bean moisture and beans
The moisture from chickpeas, white beans, lentils, black beans, broad beans and many other canned legumes, also called aquafaba, is a source of potassium, just like the beans themselves.

4. Spinach and moisture from other vegetables
When you steam or cook spinach, some of the nutrients leak into the water. This also applies to many other vegetables. When the water has cooled you can use it in a regular watering schedule to add potassium, calcium and iron.

5. And urine?
Fresh human urine is an excellent and non-toxic source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Nitrogen is by far the largest useful component, so this is still a good liquid fertilizer for the vegetative phase. Urine must be diluted considerably before you can add it to the earth. Never pour it directly onto the plants but mix one part of urine per eight parts of water.

Another good way to provide weed plants with natural and organic fertilizers is by making organic compost tea. This is slightly more complicated than kitchen waste buried in the ground, but yields a greater amount of fertilizer. Nowadays you can also buy compost tea in powder form. Compost tea that you spray on your plants with a plant spray nourishes the leaves and also protects against vermin!

Compost tea nourishes roots and leaves. As a leaf feed it leaves a protective layer of useful microbes, which protects against vermin.
Not for hydro growers
When growing in coconut fibers, rock wool or another inert substrate, the grower must supply all the nutrients himself. It is difficult to get this mix right and there are many commercial fertilizers available that give the plants everything they need. If you use hydroponics it is also better to use the specialized fertilizers that have been developed for this system.

Attempts to use home-made fertilizers in hydroponics inevitably lead to more problems than they solve, because the tubes become clogged and unwanted, unpleasant bacteria quickly take over your nutrient tank. However, soil is much easier and suitable for feeding with organic material. It is also important to keep the soil moist.

I wish you all a great day!
