(Snag: an official forestry term for a dead tree). I photographed this snag in the Hoh Rain Forest, on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington state, USA, this past summer. We were inundated back home with nasty smoke from forest fires, and escaping to a place that was moist, cool, and that still contained some breathable oxygen in the atmosphere sounded like a grand idea. It was. ### Ooh, What IS That? ### While wandering about on the trails through the deep, dank forest, this snag peeked out and beckoned from the canopy of the forest beyond. (Canopy: another forestry term for the combined branch layers of forested trees. Think large, green tarp of branches up above.) We stopped to take a look, and there at the top of the snag, was a small, round patch of green. Just sitting there, thumbing it's bushy nose at those of us way way down on the forest-floor below. Knowing the snag was completely dead, owing to the lack of bark on the bole (Forestry term: the trunk), I was taken back a bit by that small green patch way up high, perched jauntily like a moldy wig on the top of the snag. A hilarious reference to a 'forested rug-piece' was made in the direction of my hiking companion...which either fell on deaf ears, or was just too dumb for retort....as no reply was forthcoming, beyond a look of unidentifiable something or other. So there was only one way to find out for sure what was up in the canopy above. ### Applied Tree Science 101 ### I suppose one could climb this snag for a closer look, if so inclined. But optical analysis seemed a whole lot more prudent at the time. After all, we were in a National Park, and climbing LIVE trees is frowned upon by those rangers in odd, starched Smokey hats. I'm sure climbing dead trees that fall down rather easily would not be appreciated either. So, zooming in with the 30x on my Lumix, I discovered what our little green, forested hairpiece was all about: <center>![P1390545-2 179kb.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVYiyfwtQCzcTXPBpqFmZNtVHeR2HT7GYpSPoMCpZDJz8/P1390545-2%20179kb.jpg)</center> ### *Snag Wig-ery* ### -------------- Our little green patch way up high appears to be a younger Hemlock tree, that has gained a root-hold on the rotting center of our Spruce snag. These old, dead trees are often called 'nurse trees', (or 'nurse logs', if our snag is no longer in a vertical plane), for rather obvious reasons. They provide a cozy place for younger trees to grow up and gain a tree foot-hold in a nice, wet, spongy, nutrient-rich environment. The snag 'nurses' the tree into adult life and beyond. ### But What Happens When The Snag Falls Down? ### Very good question. I have seen shorter snags and downed logs that have similar trees growing on their surface. The new, live trees have roots that grow down the log/snag sides, soon becoming tree stems that hold the new tree up in-place when the snag falls or the log rots away beneath. These resulting trees are rather eerie and comical looking, like large spiders or odd space creatures, crab-walking the forest floor on multiple, stilted legs of solid wood. Very peculiar, and somewhat rare creatures of the forest. This case, however, is not likely to be one of these happy, movie-like endings in the make. Our small tree is no-doubt doomed to a rather violent end, once the snag finally rots and falls to the elements. I fear a 200 foot drop to the forest floor below is a harsh tree-pill to swallow for our little green bush up on-high. ### Just Like Grandma Used To Say ### So, for now, we will appreciate our new-found, little green bushy friend way up in the canopy, and hope that the snag stays vertical for a long, long time. As my Grandmother was wont to say whenever life got her down in the grandmotherly chops now and then: "Go While You Can". Makes sense to me, and probably as well to a short, fat, little green tree, perched precariously hundreds of feet above the hard forest floor. *Go while you can, little tree, go while you can*. ## <center>~ Finto ~</center> ------------------- #### Thanks for stopping in and viewing the odd-duck little tree of the Hoh Rain Forest. If you have any thoughts about snags, opportunistic species, National Parks, fun grandmotherly sayings, or anything else this post reminds you of, feel free to comment away in the spaces below. I'd love to hear from you. #### ---------- ------------------- <center>http://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/12/04/picmonkey200pixltotaketoPhotoDirector2be5d.jpg</center> ----------------- --------------------- ### **Please UPVOTE, COMMENT and FOLLOW if you enjoy my works.** ### #### And go to @ddschteinn -- There's a whole lot more... #### *Posted: 12/05/2017* ----- ----------- ### *Excerpts From Late-Night Discussions With A Mechanical Cat* ### ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTiyBCZya5A9YHFqcrKEDcyLeELNKA3aRX68bH2k7eZtn/image.png)

Grandma was a wise soul, bless her heart. And she loved nature, so she is probably smiling right about now ( : Glad you learned a thing or two, Science can be so much fun. Especially c-a-t-f-a-c-t-s. Stay tuned, good chance there's more where that came from.

I didn't realize that a tree could actually grow on top of another tree. I can't help but to root for the tiny tree. Although , I realize its probably not meant to be. Great photo's and explanation, I actually learned something. :) And that conversation with catfacts... LOL

Yes, I fear the little tree may not ever make it to large status. We can always hope. I'm glad I could actually write something one might learn from. I've been told Science from this end is at times, a bit,....skewed. Also happy you enjoyed the catfacts. There's always a chance those may pop up again...

Ahh dd, all of your tree terminology makes me remember terms of my youth, like school marm, barber chair, and so on. I've always enjoyed happening upon a towering snag in the midst of a strip, and your snag with its Hemlock hair piece truly is treealicious! My dad can't say words right and always would refer to Hemlock as, *"There's a nice Hemlatch over there."* I know not why. Lovely photo and even more lovely commentary. I would write something more awesome, but I put in a long day at the 'brare and am somewhat depleted! Have a nice night!!!!

"The school marm sat in the barber chair, while pops discussed understory vegetation with foresty aplomb". We should start an essay contest on here. I'm sure it would be a BIG hit... And I'm sure you went to bed after a long day, but thanks muchly for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the little forestry lesson. It was fun to write, and it wasn't even by Mr. Chicken this time. Your dad has to be one of the more entertaining individuals around, that's for sure. Never a dull moment...which would be wild. Well, I'm off on a walk, too icy for biking. Learned THAT lesson the hard way. Toodles, 'alou.

Thank you for the compliment and nice words my friend. I've been visiting family for awhile, with minimal to no internet except in moments. So have definitely been missing from Steemit. I missed it greatly. Hope to make up time now. My grandmother, much as your grandfather you write about, was very wise, with a grand sense of humor, and I miss her dearly. She loved nature, and when I visited her in tropical Florida, we would sit for hours watching the fiddler crabs, birds and other wildlife. So glad we have our family memories, and they are so positive and fun to re-live for the rest of our lives.

That is such a very bizarre thing. I had no idea that trees would take root and grow in the routing remains of others. A 200 foot fall is certainly not a good thing!

Nature is truly and amazing Mother. And as she sometimes points out, "it's not the fall that does ya in, it's that landing thing at the end".

Interesting, and a nice insight into forester vocabulary as well. I will call this a nurse mushroom from now on: ![](http://www.den-uijl.nl/photography/stored/parasiet_k.jpg)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. That is an amazing photo. I did notice how odd that was when I first saw it. Never seen anything like it in all my woodsy days. I like that, a nurse 'shroom. Nice place to live out your short fungi life. Things in nature are so differing, yet widely similar at times, when you compare a 300+ year old tree and a 3-6 day (?) visual part of the fungi cycle. Different road, same end result. *Fascinating*...

Oh! It's great to see your article in Steemit once again after a very long time! I would like to say that they are really "amazing trees"! I mean the very tall Spruce snag and the younger greenery Hemlock tree! It’s great that you look higher and see them. Good finding and great observation. And good scientific story! I really love your grandmother wordings; “"Go While You Can"…. Good job! ;)

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed my toupe'd tree. They are amazing, those Spruces. Some are 10 feet (3.3 meters?) across and larger. And very very old. (500-1000 years). Yes, my grandmother was very wise, and had a wonderful sense of humor. I miss her so, but am glad I got to know her for a good while in my life. I was very lucky indeed, and richer for it by far.

It sure was. We had some NASTY air here. Off the charts on the health-o-meter. It was a nice break. The day we left the peninsula, the smoke rolled in there too. Yucko. That is an advantage of a 30x zoom. I can see things without risking life and limb...
