Living and Learning: At Some Point You DO Know Enough!
Slightly cryptic title for today's post?

I'm a big fan of education, and *self*-education; the more we know about something we're working on, the better off we are; the more successful we're likely to become.

*"Continuing education"* is definitely an important part of our careers and lives, as well.

*Wild Washington coast*

However, some people seem to become life's *eternal students,* always taking *one more* class, *one more* workshop and getting *one more* certification in their field... all in service of reaching some magical point at which they feel *"Appropriately Qualified"* to do whatever it is they are doing.

I'll be the first to admit that there was a time in my *own* life when I felt like I was *"undercredentialled"* so I was always looking for *"formal"* ways to prove that I knew what I already *knew* that I knew but couldn't *prove* that I knew!

The difficult thing I eventually had to face up to was the fact that using the rationalization that I *"didn't feel quite prepared yet"* as an *excuse* to not interface with life.

Was I *really* worried about not being able to adequately do my work?

Although it was not an easy thing to do, I actually ended up having a *"session"* with my wife (**@whitelightxpress**) some years ago. *Part* of what made it not easy was the fact that when you're that *close* to someone and their situation it can be difficult to stay neutral and objective. But hey, I had an expert in the house... so *make the most of it,* right?

So, in spite of always *"preparing myself"* in my profession as a book editor, I felt *"inadequate"* because I have no degree in English; have not worked in the publishing field; have minimal experience with library sciences... but I am actually a *really, really good editor.*

And that wasn't really the *problem.*

*"Caught in the web of my own stories?*

I was prepared to be *an editor,* but I was *not* prepared *(aka "afraid of")* the inevitable bumps and bruises I would experience *(mostly to my ego)* every time a potential client would choose a *less able* but *more "qualified"* editor, rather than me.

It had nothing to do with *skills* or *qualifications,* but with my idealism and subsequent disappointment in a world where *best skills* isn't necessarily what people chose to get a job — *any* job — done.

This all happened about 8-10 years ago and I have since learned *(more or less)* to not worry so much about it, even though I am *still* a little uncomfortable when I have to go *"out there"* and drum up new prospective clients. As I am about to do, in the coming weeks... hence this post.

Thanks for reading, and have a great final bit of your week!

***How about YOU? Do you ever feel "undercredentialled?" Do you ever try to learn more than you really NEED to about something new, before starting it? Or do you not worry? Give me a shout back...
