Random Musings About "Inspiration" and "Fast Food Consciousness"

<p>Since I spend a lot of time in introspection, and a lot of time around others who are either searching for <em>more fulfilling lives</em> or even the elusive "<em>enlightenment</em>," the side effect is that I often feel almost <em>bombarded</em> by <em>"inspirational"</em> thoughts and ideas.</p>
<p>They come to me in the form of articles, or quotes or the inevitable memes that seem to always be doing the rounds within the "<em>Conscious Community.</em>" They come to me on my Facebook and twitter feeds<em> (yes, I still DO use other social media!)</em>.</p>
<h2><em>Much of the Time, I Don't Really Feel all that "Inspired"&nbsp;</em></h2>

<p>I <em>especially</em> don't feel very inspired by an endless parade of "<em>inspirational memes</em>" going across my newsfeeds-- sometimes to the point that I have to sit and ponder the question "<em>Is there something WRONG with me?</em>"&nbsp;</p>
<p>I mean, seriously... why do I feel more annoyed than inspired by all these pictures and memes?</p>
<p>Here's this one picture of some young woman standing on a beach at sunset in white flowing robes with the words "<em>Breathe In the Fullness of Life</em>" across the bottom. Posted by someone who shared <em>only</em> the picture, and <em>not a single word</em> to share about<em> their own</em> experience of why they posted the picture or how it specifically relates to their journey.</p>
<p>Maybe my problem is that I don't relate, or maybe I'm just too literal.</p>
<p>Most of us-- even those who practically live <em>at</em> the sea shore-- don't tend to stand around in flowing robes at sunset and practice yoga. We do so on a mat, in our basements. Or our living room.</p>
<p><em>"Oh, but think of it as a guided meditation."</em></p>
<p>Fine. Fair enough.&nbsp;</p>
<h2><em>Your Reality... or Your Wishes?</em></h2>

<p>Let's talk about sharing the meme but <em>not</em> sharing your personal experience. Let's talk about the parade of memes people post but never say a word about. Which seems to be the vast majority.</p>
<p>There's no "<em>I was standing in the shower this morning with steam filling my lungs and it made me think of a misty beach at sunset and how awesome it would be to experience this:</em>"&nbsp;</p>
<p>Or something like that.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Context. You know? At least a few words to help us <em>relate </em>to what you're sharing.</p>
<p><em>True</em> inspirational messages and stories typically spring from personal stories and sharing.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Otherwise, what you're sharing just ends up looking like you're filling space, and little else. Is that <em>really</em> your intent?</p>
<h2><em>Fast Food Consciousness?</em></h2>

<p>The thing about "Conscious Living" and Englightenment is that they tend to be states that require a lot of time and awareness to arrive at.</p>
<p>In contrast, the parade of "<em>inspirational memes without explanation</em>" feel like a somewhat sad form of "<em>Fast Food Consciousness.</em>"&nbsp;</p>
<p>Call me cynical, but they reek of an underlying lack of Presence; an unspoken voice that is saying "<em>I don't have any actual deep thoughts, but here's a picture of what I think people with deep thoughts might look like, so I won't look like I am not working on becoming more conscious.</em>"&nbsp;</p>
<p>Then again, some of those picture look <em>less</em> like a statement about enlightened living, and <em>more</em> like an excuse to show off the results of six months spent at the gym... by posing in yoga pants.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As I said, maybe I have just grown too cynical.</p>
<h2><em>"They wouldn't be so popular if people didn't like them."&nbsp;</em></h2>
<p>Well... maaaaybe.</p>

<p>Another possibility is that they are so popular because they are <em>"convenient" (like fast food),</em> and allow people to appear deep and conscious without actually having to arrive at deeper consciousness, presence and awareness by themselves. In essence... pretty packaging around thin air.</p>
<p>Don't get me wrong, I recognize that we are all at different point along our individual paths towards something that feels like "<em>personal fulfillment,</em>" to <em>US</em>. And maybe we reach for "<em>fast food answers</em>" because they are <em>there</em>, they are convenient, and we haven't yet grasped that they don't really <em>do</em> much for us.&nbsp;</p>
<p>So maybe all I am really suggesting here is that we be awake and aware of our actions, even when we reach for the fast food expressions.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Let people know <em>WHY and HOW</em> you came to sharing that inspirational meme.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Because simply trying to appear "<em>clever</em>" and "<em>deep</em>" and "<em>ultra spiritual</em>" isn't the same thing as having actual wisdom and consciousness.</p>
<p><em><strong>How About YOU?</strong></em> Have you spent much time around the self-development, spiritual and consciousness industry? Do some of the ways people portray themselves seem more "<em>manufactured</em>" than real? Do "<em>spiritual</em>" and "<em>enlightenment</em>" memes seem like "<em>fast food consciousness</em>" to you? I do spend a lot of time introspecting. although thoughts never come to me in form of articles - lucky you :P 

Now, I don't really like memes. What you say is quite true about a lot of things though, not just memes. I mean, I can write a detailed post and still pour nothing that's really "me" into it. The idea of interacting through virtual means makes it easy to put on masks, and memes are just another instance of that. On the one hand, I guess, I am not forced to reveal who I am to a bunch of people I don't really know or, probably, care...on the other, since you're talking mostly about an inspirational context, if I try to motivate others or "enlighten" them I should post my own thoughts and experiences as well, or I'm not different from a Jeowa's Witness' pamphlet. 

I like the notion of *Fast Food Consciousness*, in three words you summed up a ton of issues of our society. But do you think that *actual* wisdom and consciousness are something that people try to achieve at all, these days?

Meh. Sharing an inspirational post with information about what it means to you certainly can be revealing ABOUT YOU but it doesn't really reveal anything for another person about themselves. Most inspirational posts that I put up, say on Instagram, hit somewhere deeply personal in and to me, and I assume that they might also hit another person--but possibly in a completely different way. Why should I taint or color their perspective of the quote when they might get something completely different from it, something they vitally need, or, in your case, apparently don't need? Basically, I don't think it's fast food consciousness to share a meaningful thought and not give your own spin on it. I think it might actually be fast food consciousness to require someone else to do the work for you of interpreting the thought. How's that for a bit of turn around? LOL

Certainly an interesting perspective, and thank you!

I suppose I am an eternal student of humans, life and their motivations, so I find it interesting to see what people have to *say* about what they share. When people put things up, I'm curious... *"Oh, I just put this here because it's clever and I'm trying to get 10,000 twitter followers"* means something different from *"This represents a core value for me."*

But certainly, there are many ways of looking at things.

Fast Food Consciousness -- perfectly captured!

I understand what you are talking about, and for me I see this process going on everywhere in society. It is the process of turning real into fake, the process of replicating the form while somehow missing out on all of the substance.

In the end, I think it is the process of misconstruing the surface for the subject.

Consider music. Has become a revolving wheel that starts with innovation and true creativity which is mindlessly latched onto by corporations and endlessly replicated -- we saw it with 80s hair bands, then with grunge, then with hip hop, and now with the neo-folk. But did Sheriff (the band) ever compare to Van Halen? Nope. All of the looks and none of the substance. Why? Because Van Halen spent years playing house parties in LA before they became famous, honing their look and their sound. They earned their fame honestly. They created themselves themselves. And then music executives went out and replicated the sound and the look, but that doesn't capture the soul. Fast food music.

On a deeper level, we see this with agriculture -- chemical farming is all about trying to find shortcuts to create food that looks good while neglecting taste and nutrition.

We see it with allopathic medicine, which is all about masking symptoms in order to create a simulacrum of health while neglecting the true physiological process that lead to true health.

We see it in society both here and abroad, with political opportunists growing astroturf protests at home and fomenting color revolutions abroad (and perhaps at home as well...)

Unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion that this is nothing new for human society . Human religions always start with a deep thinker, a maverick, someone who eschews convention and charts their own path, closely followed by a flock who parrot back the words but don't really understand the substance, words that become theology, then orthodoxy, and then liturgy and catechism -- in the end all form and no substance, all of the appearance of spirituality but none of the actual content.

It would appear that human society is prone to churn -- innovators are always followed by copy cats. Perhaps the cycle has accelerated as we become over crowded?
