 Today I'd like to share with you the story of a remarkable man. Known as Ziryab, or jay bird, this almost forgotten musician, scholar, designer and inventor had a lasting influence on humanity that continues to this day. Born in Iraq around the year 789, Ziryab studied music and science. He travelled extensively before becoming the court musician in Cordoba in 822. Ziryab, however did not limit his talents to music. For example, he invented the custom of drinking from glass instead of metal goblets. He invented one of the first known toothpastes. He invented underarm deoderant. And he instilled the tradition of three course meals served on tablecloths! But he didn't stop there either! Ziryab began the trend of men wearing short hair and shaving. He also introduced vegetables like asparagus, taught people to wear different clothes in summer and winter, and opened the world's first conservatoire. All of this 700 years before Da Vinci!
