New Books Tuesday: October 9
Many people know that Wednesday is New Comics day. Somewhat less known is the fact that Tuesday, in the US, is New Books day.

Weekly disclaimer: This weekly post highlights some of the books being published on any given week, usually in the science fiction and fantasy genres, both YA and books for adults. I am VERY likely to miss cool new books, so please feel free to tell me about them in the comments. Sometimes these will be books I've read a pre-publishing copy of, but most of the time, they will not. These are books I find notable, but I certainly don't read fast enough in English to be able to read all the cool books that come out every week.

When it comes to new books, last week was huge, and next week is exciting. This week... It's kinda just... there.

[The Future is Female! 25 Classic SF Stories By Women](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/37842561-the-future-is-female) edited by Lisa Yaszek
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1515268429l/37842561.jpg)

If anyone ever tells you "science fiction is, and always has been, a men's genre," just throw this book at them. And then say, "also? Mary Shelley." Women built this, just as much as men did, while dealing with a ton more crap.
___

[The Phoenix Empress (Their Bright Ascendancy #2)](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36216359-the-phoenix-empress) by K. Arsenault Rivera
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1536198135l/36216359.jpg)

It is a testament to how unexciting this week is that one of my top books is one I will not be reading. Last Year's **The Tiger's Daughter** didn't work for me. It had tropes I don't love, and was a big dissapointment. But this is still a major series, and for folks who don't mind those particular tropes (sorry, all spoilers), it was quite good. People loved it, to be sure.
___

[Power Failure](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23168774-power-surge) by Ben Bova
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1418147666l/23168774.jpg)

This, from veteran SF writer Bova, seems to be more political thriller than SF.
___

[The Rift Coda (Rift Uprising #3)](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/37854405-the-rift-coda) by Amy S. Foster
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1525221830l/37946108.jpg)

This is the finale for a science fiction trilogy people seem to like.
___

[Austral](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33673959-austral) by Paul McAuley
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1495059075l/33673959.jpg)

This novel appears to be an action adventure set in a world where attempts to mitigate climate instability has failed. So that sounds depressing.
___

[There Before the Chaos](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36343160-there-before-the-chaos) by K.B. Wagers
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1526835077l/36343160.jpg)

This is the first book in a new trilogy, that is the follow-up to a previous trilogy. It's space opera, and seems fun.
___

[In the Night Wood](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/37570474-in-the-night-wood) by Dale Bailey
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1519262427l/37570474.jpg)

This contemporary fantasy of the English countryside kinda seems like it may be my thing.
___

[Bright Ruin (Dark Gifts #3)](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33206899-bright-ruin) by Vic James
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1518650622l/38581698.jpg)

This YA fantasy is the conclusion of a successful series people seem to like.
___

[The Healer](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36099169-the-healer) by Donna Freitas
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1518819025l/36099169.jpg)

This YA novel, about a young woman with a healing gift, is getting some nice reviews.
___

[Dagger and Coin](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28449180-dagger-and-coin) by Kathy MacMillan
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1518116866l/28449180.jpg)

This fantasy not-quite-sequel to the author's **Sword and Verse** is getting some nice reviews.
___

[The Devil’s Thief (The Last Magician #2)](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38336563-the-devil-s-thief) by Lisa Maxwell
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1519248756l/38336563.jpg)

This one is another sequel, this time in the urban fantasy genre. And the description and reviews have got me considering getting the first one!
___

[Blanca & Roja](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36952596-blanca-roja) by Anna-Marie McLemore
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1516986822l/36952596.jpg)

This YA fantasy has gotten my interest and curiosity by dealing with one of my favorite themes in fiction: Sisterhood.
___

[Light Years](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38496759-light-years) by Kass Morgan
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1521039744l/38496759.jpg)

This is the first novel in a new series by the author of The 100 series. It's also YA, and getting some very good reviews. Space school! I like a space school story.
___

[Beneath the Citadel](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36430924-beneath-the-citadel) by Destiny Soria
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1518016956l/36430924.jpg)

YA fantasy with a rag tag team of rebel teens. This is getting compared to Six of Crows, which is high praise.
___

[Freedom Trials](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/37941585-freedom-trials) by Meredith Tate
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1526929984l/37941585.jpg)

This YA story of a young woman, imprisoned for a crime that was wiped from her memory, seems like a combination of a few different YA series. Reviews are mixed, but this could be a hit.
___

[Last Pick](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/37534374-last-pick) by Jason Walz
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1518210842l/37534374.jpg)

This graphic novel is about the kids the aliens didn't abduct, because they weren't deemed valuable enough. They rebel.
___

[White Dancing Elephants](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39607580-white-dancing-elephants) by Chaya Bhuvaneswar
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1522102600l/39607580.jpg)

This short story collection is getting some amazing reviews.
___

[Killing Commendatore](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38820047-killing-commendatore) by Haruki Murakami
![](https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1527854255l/38820047.jpg)

I'll admit, this probably should have opened the list. It's the new Murakami novel, after all. But... 688 pages? Really? I got exhausted just reading that number.
