Homegrown Mushroom Update - 1 week in

Oi Oi Oyster Mushrooms!!! 😬

You may of seen the other day that i ordered some more mushroom spawn the other day and they sent the wrong spawn, i ended up with oyster mushroom spawn instead of portobello….

[The Mushroom Mixup](https://steemit.com/homesteading/@digitaldan/-when-parcels-arrive-2018-07-12-18-17-31)
However this seems to have worked out better than imagined. I mixed up a new batch of medium using 50% brown rice and 50% by mass of vermiculite and mixed through some of the spawn and it’s been less than a week and these things are bursting into life!

The mycelium is working it way though :D

So this is going slightly better than my previous attempts Ha! Lets hope it continues that way, i think there going to need another couple of weeks maybe in the jar before i can move them out into my makeshift fruiting chamber (i’ve got planned to do a post on it soon)

So far it’s looking healthy

O boy im loving this adventure into growing mushrooms not only will it fill my belly full of good home grown food, but the photography opportunitys will be great - This mycelium is magical stuff!

> The growth of mycelia can be extensive. A form of honey fungus found in the forests of Michigan, which began from a single spore and grows mainly underground, now is estimated to cover 40 acres. The mycelia network is thought to be over 100 tons in weight and is at least 1,500 years old. More recently, another species of fungus discovered in Washington State was found to cover at least 1,500 acres

Well that’s it for this one, its so late in the UK that i’m going to struggle getting up in the morning but, you all make it worth it!

ahhh just the post i was looking for ;-) a friend just have me a whole bag of oyster mycelium in a bag.. I was wondering what substrate to use.. i have brown rice but not vemiculite. i wonder if i just soak or cook the rice until its soft an holds water whether that alone will be ok?

thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comment @eco-alex I'm not sure if just brown rice would work, especially once cooked as the moisture levels may be to high, id try it any way but maybe avoid cooking it so its got some ability to absorb.
Or cardboard seems like a great alternative and oysters will happily grow on it (I'm collecting lots from work correctly to compost, but now for the oysters also)
I'd love to see how you get on with your mushroom adventure 👍
