Bem (Episodes 1-6) Review

Imagine a world in which the main city is full of your Ivory Tower elites down to the middle class, and they live in relative peace and ignorance of the world just outside their town. In this world is a growing issue of 'Humanoid Monsters', people who have some kind of augmented power that makes them something other than human.

Three Yokai named Bem, Bela, and Belo came across this town and decided to stay and fight the monsters in order to protect the regular humans from them. For reasons that don't' come up in the first half of the show, they believe if they help enough humans they will one day become humans themselves. It seems kind of interesting at first, and I like how they use a police girl who was transferred to outer for being too reckless, and she quickly has to learn about the horrors and corruption of Outer, be it from the people themselves or the Humanoid Monsters. You have a lot of interesting elements that could make for a great show here.

Now let me start to explain where everything went wrong.

Episode one takes itself very seriously, as does the majority of episode two. There were a couple of light-hearted moments there, as shows like this need, but nothing that out there. We find out the Yokai that are here are 'wearing the face' of someone who has passed away and thus appears human. Bela comes in contact with someone who knew the person Bela was imitating while still alive, and you get a really dark moment where you learn about her past and the horrible circumstances where the girl died, And then suddenly this guy shows up.

We have never seen him before, he summons a giant bowling ball to kill a girl and is constantly making really fucking bad bowling puns for a couple of minutes before he dies. It's like if you were watching Batman Begins and suddenly it turns into a Monty Python sketch mid-way through the movie, only to go right back to being Batman Begins. This is the norm going forward, enemies that are just silly. There is one guy who underwent this surgery to become this Humanoid Monster so he could turn himself into a Vacuum Cleaner. No,this isn't an exaggeration or me trying to undermine the plot, he wanted to become a vacuum cleaner so he could clean the city. Yes, he has a backstory that attempts to justify this, and no. It does not allow you to take this any more seriously.

This is made all the worse by the fact the Yokai just don't react in a fight. They all kind of have a deadpan look on their faces at all times and you never really get a sense if they are struggling or not.I mean they kind of say they are at times, but it never shows. There are bits of emotion that come up as they live out lives as humans, but it isn't really enough to make them feel like characters. I get they aren't human, and intentionally are written to feel like they aren't human, but it feels more like they aren't actually characters then like they aren't actually human. It's hard to get invested into anything going on.

Even more, is the fights feel awkwardly edited like you aren't really seeing everything going on. After the woman get's murdered by the giant bowling ball, for example, you just kind of don't see the body again. You see the bowling ball makes contact but... that's all.No fight ever really feels complete, and as a result, the show suffers once again and fails to be able to invest you in what's going on.

There is one thing I want to give the show credit for, and that is the reaction of Sonia Summers, the above mentioned police girl, upon seeing Bem in his monster form. Because of her character archetype of being just, but reckless, you wouldn't really expect this from most anime. It's not that she is scared, it's that despite recognizing him as the man who saver her life a couple times by now, she shot him. It's a small detail, but it really does help to showcase just how out of this world the Yokai are to humans. Even our lead character, despite not being attacked at all, is scared enough that her fear overrides her judgement and possibly even her own ideals. It's sadly not followed up again, but it was a wonderful moment all the same.

The story basically is someone wants to capture the three Yokai, though you don't have any real information come episode six, and by that point, it's almost impossible to care. The bad fights, poor story, and uninteresting characters just give you nothing to care about. This is all made worse by just how bizarre and goofy the enemies are in a show that is doing it's best to be a deep, dark, and serious as possible. I can't really see any reason to pick this show up.
