# Researchers have previously estimated that <b>unnecessary occupational licensing</b> could be [keeping millions of jobs out of the market](https://steemit.com/politics/@doitvoluntarily/occupational-licensing-keeps-millions-of-jobs-out-of-the-market).  
<center> </center> The more that the government interferes *by requiring individuals to pass through various regulatory hoops* prior to getting into business, the more that they essentially *discourage those individuals from ever trying to enter the market to begin with*. 

Whether it's <b>organizing flowers, making drinks, cutting hair, walking dogs, offering tours, or doing makeup</b>, there are countless occupations nowadays that require people to first seek permission before they can start to serve their community. 

# These licensing schemes keep prices high and quality low, they do little to improve services.

<center> </center> One recent study that was conducted by the <b>[Institute for Justice](https://www.courier-tribune.com/news/20181116/study-occupational-licensing-costs-jobs)</b> suggests that in North Carolina alone, occupational licensing could be keeping at least 40,000 jobs out of the market.

# The [study results also suggested](https://www.carolinajournal.com/news-article/ij-study-shows-occupational-licensing-cost-north-carolina-more-than-42000-jobs/) that the licensing could be contributing to <b>millions in economic losses</b>. 

<center> </center> [For the country overall](https://www.courier-tribune.com/news/20181116/study-occupational-licensing-costs-jobs), it's estimated that <b>lost economic value</b> as a result of these rules, surpasses $6 billion on the conservative side. However, it could be somewhere more in the range of <b>$180 billion in lost value</b>. 

When there are fewer competitors in the market, <b>those who are providing the services, *who hold licenses*,</b> are able to charge more for their services. The occupational licensing rules help them to carve out and maintain a monopoly. That isn't good for the people, if they are looking for quality and reasonable cost.

Food truck vendors, hair braiding stylists, florists, and other entrepreneurs, have had to *fight for their rights* to [serve and try to earn an honest living](https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/11/the-right-to-earn-a-living/546071/). It's a shame to see that the government has done so much to try and keep people from attempting to better their lives.
