# Shipping containers are being re-purposed today to help build affordable housing, to grow hydroponic farms, and more. 
<center> </center> As many cities today struggle with <b>high real estate prices</b> and a lack of options, people have been turning to seek out alternative solutions that might help.

This has included moving toward tiny homes and shipping container homes, as this avenue provides many more people a quick path to home ownership.

 Rather than letting thousands of shipping containers sit and waste away in a shipyard somewhere, they are instead being used as homes and offices.

# You can now find shipping containers being re-designed into office spaces, small homes, even entire office buildings or hotels.

# For areas like San Diego,...
<center> </center> the real estate market in that region is reportedly <b>struggling with highly inflated prices</b> because of the limited supply of homes coupled with the high demand. As far as affordability, that region is ranked within <b>the lowest in the nation</b>, according to a [previous Home Builders report](https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/real-estate/sd-fi-econometer-housing-20181109-htmlstory.html). 

Shipping containers might be able to help.

It's now reported that for the first time, there are plans to have shipping containers be used in San Diego to build affordable housing solutions. When they're finished, they hope to have constructed at least 21 new unites, using at least 42 shipping containers. 

The [homes are going to be built](https://www.10news.com/news/making-it-in-san-diego/making-it-in-san-diego-shipping-container-homes-to-be-built-in-san-diego) <b>off-site</b> and then delivered to the location, all in one day.

You can already find these sorts of homes and hotels worldwide, with several scattered around the United States already. They're anticipating that the cost for the homes in San Diego could start around $140,000.

One startup known [as Boxouse has been](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-03-16/now-you-can-live-in-a-remodeled-shipping-container) selling affordable shipping container homes for around $49,000. Those behind the project have admitted that <b>a shipping container home might not be the ideal home</b>, but it does provide a solution that can help to ease current housing shortages. 

Another player in this space, [SG Blocks, has also been](https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/18/shipping-container-business-sg-blocks-changes-construction-industry.html) looking to re-purpose shipping containers, they take care of the project from start to finish and can have a home delivered in approximately 3 months.

While it might not be for everyone, there are entrepreneurs working hard to establish creative solutions that can enable people overcome the problems currently plaguing the real estate market in various regions worldwide.
