Spain Looking To Ban Cars In Dozens of Cities

# Pontevedra, Spain made the move several years ago to ban <b>all automobile traffic</b> in the region that wasn't considered "essential traffic". 
<center> </center> Now, authorities in Spain are looking to extend their plan to encompass at least 100 more cities in the region in order to meet their climate agenda goals. 

# [A recent survey has suggested](https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2018/11/spain-nationwide-car-free-city-center-car-ban/576976/) that a great deal of the public are in support of the move to ban cars more broadly in the area.

## Vehicles have recently been prohibited from traveling freely in downtown Madrid if they aren't vehicles that produce zero emissions...
<center> </center> It's been estimated that this recent change might have cut traffic by as much as <b>[32 percent](https://www.theverge.com/2018/12/3/18123561/vehicle-emissions-pollution-ban-madrid-spain-traffic-decrease
)</b> or more.

<center> </center> Madrid is reportedly looking to establish a <b>low emissions zone</b> and this meant that any petrol vehicles that have been registered before 2000 or any diesel vehicles that have been registered before 2006, [are now banned from the downtown area](https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2018/nov/30/its-the-only-way-forward-madrid-bans-polluting-vehicles-from-city-centre). <b>However, there are exceptions made for vehicles that meet certain specific requirements</b>. 

Mayors from other regions have also voiced similar interest in following down this route of banning diesel cars and other vehicles in the same fashion; mayors from [Mexico City, Athens, and Paris](https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2018/nov/30/its-the-only-way-forward-madrid-bans-polluting-vehicles-from-city-centre).

Spanish car sales [have understandably declined](https://europe.autonews.com/article/20181204/ANE/181209902/spanish-sales-down-13-negative-climate-blamed) for new cars in recent months and dealers have blamed the *negative climate* for the fall *[in registrations](https://europe.autonews.com/article/20181204/ANE/181209902/spanish-sales-down-13-negative-climate-blamed)*. 

# According to the recent poll regarding plans for expansion of this ban throughout Spain, at least 63 percent of respondents indicated that they would be in favor of <b>[greatly restricting car access](https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2018/11/spain-nationwide-car-free-city-center-car-ban/576976/)</b> in downtown city areas.
<center> </center> [A bill on this issue is expected to reach parliament](https://reneweconomy.com.au/spain-bans-petrol-cars-fracking-fossil-fuel-subsidies-aims-for-100-renewables-43840/) by the end of the year. There are currently only cars that produce their emissions elsewhere.

Cars will be pretty much abandoned, but why push it?  Why make things troublesome in the interim?

I'd be in support of it. Several historic city centers have begun going that way already. Mรกlaga, for example, put a bunch of pedestrian-only roads in and it is quite lovely that way.

When I lived in Andalucรญa, I didn't have or even need a car. There were a few times where it was inconvenient but, overall, I preferred that. In the USA, I absolutely must have my own vehicle to survive. :-P

I think this is a major issue with all major cities but not with improving the last mile delivery for humans, it's still going to be difficult to accept. for many.

howdy sir doitvoluntarily! This is interesting. Forcing people to drive zero immission cars, that would just be electric right? At this point? They must have some pollution problems there but I'l like to hear the opposing arguments.
