Authors of 1999 film *Life* should be commended for their bravery because they dared to make comedy about fate that many considered equal or worse than death. Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence play two black New Yorkers who in 1932 take part in boot-legging operation in Mississippi and end up being framed for murder actually committed by white sheriff. The plot shows how two of them are sentenced to life imprisonment and how their initial enmity turns into friendship after decades of futile attempts to get freedom through legal means or escape. Murphy, Lawrence and rest of the cast, which includes reliable character actors like Ned Beatty or R. Lee Ermey, does very good job and the script, dealing with penal system in pre-1960s institutionally racist Deep South, avoids most of the cliches related to subject. *Life*, however, fails to work as coherent whole; first part, with its nostalgic view of Prohibition-era Harlem and second part, which works as black comedy, doesn’t connect with third part, which is actually serious and rather unfunny drama, which looks like cheap copy of *Shawshank Redemption*.
