Well that is one of my passions, and apparently you as well.

One of my children (*My youngest*) as said he wants to be a writer. I've even tried to get him on steemit. The problem is he doesn't write... all he does is read. I told him he can be a writer if he wants, but he has to write.

He is an interesting person. Quite different. I am a little worried about him and whether he'll ever find that niche. His mind works very different from most people. He also seems very apathetic to most things. He is content to work a few hours at work at Subway and read.

Yet he is intelligent and I'd love for him to be doing more. Yet his mind and attitude are truly quite unique. He doesn't seem depressed over it or anything he just seems content with the fact very little is going on for him.

I clearly have no business giving advice on that.....but i'll try!! :))

I was a very apathetic youngester as well. I read a lot myself. I actually think that's pretty good, depending on what you read, but you can't be a good writer if you don't read too much. So who knows?
But the idea is to find the root of the apathy so to say..is it fear of the world? real indifference or fake-cool indifference? I don't know, in the end is about accepting the way a person is..not everyone is ambitious and driven. It's just important to push him to find out if that's really true or just a thing you say to shield yourself from failure when you're "dreams" don't really come to anything...
I dunno if that makes sense.

Yeah and it works good for some of my OTHER kids. He is the youngest of 6.

Yet he truly is a very mentally different type of person. I described what he does, but that does not come close to describing how his mind works.

He is very unusual. He doesn't seem to have fear of the world, and it does not seem fake at all.

He may end up being my child that is content to live with us, pay some rent, and do his thing. He is not really social at all other than with his family.

It is not because he has no opportunity he usually expresses disinterest and doesn't want to do those type of things when the offers come.

My other 5 kids are not like this at all...

He is very intelligent, he is just extremely unique.

Let him read, is my opinion.

I used to read an absurd amount. Book after book, sometimes multiple in one day. I read more than anyone else, non-stop.

I just read and absorbed more and more and more ideas, until they were all compacted deep into my brain, condensed into a form that I couldn't even comprehend.

But the knowledge was there.

Years later, I processed it more fully, and became a very competent writer, philosopher, scientist, and engineer.

The most important thing to me is the freedom to do what I want. When the time is right, your son will use the accumulated ideas he's read, and use them to conjure the most brilliant essays, articles, fictions, poetry, and perhaps computer programs or more.

There's no limit to what you can do, provided you have the knowledge to do it.

If there's one thing I can say, it's that I might very likely be just like your son. He will not be a child forever. He will grow, and want to do more. No matter the amount of times he's been around the sun, there will come a point of childhood's end for him, and that is when he will realize his destiny.

There's only so much reading you can do before you start writing your own adventure.

Yes we do let him do this, and we have no shortage of books and he reads them mostly on his phone these days. He is almost 21 and he read Atlas Shrugged when he was like 10 and I asked him about it later to see if he comprehended it as I wouldn't have expected a kid at age 10 to read that and really get it.

Only 21? Give him time.

There's plenty more processing that can take place before enough philosophies will snap into place. Once he's ready, he'll go do his thing.

Make sure he knows you truly do care about him; not just the idea of him.

Oh, and be aware of the "gothic" type lifestyle. Not specifically gothic clothing/subculture, but just the idea of being a bit less mainstream in thought and feeling.

It could be that he is filled with a dark hatred of society, humanity, etc, and all that other stuff that young, intelligent, and somewhat isolated people might feel.

As the darkest writer, the Heretic Kitten, I approve completely of the quiet, darker sort of personality.

There's no reason that every single person needs to be some smiling character, or boisterously happy fellow.

It's good to have some quiet, mysterious people who just absorb knowledge all day, and grow more and more wise, until they achieve a certain point where they can put their wisdom into action.

I think that readers generally develop extremely effective philosophies, because in my experience, it feels like I did.

I wouldn't push this person to have a horrible job or anything either. Crappy jobs will just crush this person, and make them miserable, so demanding rent could do more harm than good.

Not all people value shiny things. Some people see money as fetid waste, just a shiny stone that moronic apes value, but that has no value compared to the knowledge of books, philosophies, and science.

Of course, in this world, it's said that money is the key to happiness. I'm sure any person who reads books often will begin to stumble upon the harsh reality of reality.

But letting them do this at their own pace will yield a much better result than forcing corporate slavery onto someone, just to have them "build character."
