So now you've graduated... it's time to make your mark on the world... to some of you PLEASE DON'T.

There are an increasing number of terms and movements that seem to be highly destructive on survival, coexistence, and rational thought. I've often wondered if they are the byproducts of people graduating as psychologists, sociologists, or perhaps just some control freaks with no degree. Let's create terms designed to pretend reality doesn't exist and tell people it is okay for them to be in a constant state of denial and that their fantasy world is real. In fact it gets worse than that. We each can have our own fantasy world and you better not try to bring reality into it.

Here are some terms I am increasingly coming to despise. I see them as doing a great deal of harm to the minds of those that embrace them.

Safe Spaces

Virtue Signalling

Microaggressions

While I'm at it I'm also not a fan of the over use of the Myer's Briggs Personality matrix. It may be useful for generalization purposes, but people don't fit into a box, and generalizations are often WRONG. Furthermore, as someone who can move around at will in that personality matrix it is not particularly valid except for the purpose of generalization (*aka stereotyping*).

These days if you provide enough of those things any communication can quickly devolve down into a spiral of fighting/dueling over virtue signalling, microaggressions, and then attempting to deflect by labeling someone as some personality type within the Myer's Briggs Personality test. If that fails they can simply bail and say "this no longer feels like a safe space".

If the goal of creating these words was to provide people an environment where they are never wrong even when reality strongly indicates otherwise, mission success. If that was not the goal then I don't see the value of the mess in communication these things have provided. They are like mental viruses that are rotting the minds away of many people. We need some anti-virus.

We need people to embrace reality and learn how to deal with things they find uncomfortable rather than pretending they don't exist.

Are we little children that pull the sheets over our head and say "*I am safe now, because the monster can't see me.*"

The rest of this article I'm going to touch upon what these plagues actually are... find a few more of them and we can write a new chapter of a bible about modern day seven plagues, nine plagues, etc. Or just start a cult with our additions. *chuckle*

Here is a link to a PDF on recognizing Microaggressions that a friend who was disgusted by it sent me... it actually inspired this post. I'll provide an image of some of the ones I find particularly ridiculous.
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWrwyjP78q1VpV4sKgVKMAzoE9YACcAnQeyzNrSV9g1Un/image.png)
Don't ask them where they are from... It is just better to not know. Have fun thinking of a way to find that information out without using a microaggression.

![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXiLufvAD23UCd287jK8rtMm7PgPj16kPFyxuz5PnMYuo/image.png)
Don't pay someone a compliment. It is now fully justified for them to treat their assumptions as to why you asked a question or made a statement than it is for you to say anything.

![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf4Kjqx7qgkNFDX4MAp4Mp6v6pPQdT1rtydDyUddcGT7a/image.png)

![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmb7UbG9pzu6biTthykqG8yddsd1tMngdwRdJgEnTN2tEe/image.png)

![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRLxi8BzWReZW54cETnss6KmujFyQG1Wm51sBk6V3PeyL/image.png)

That's all I'm going to show of that. I can only read idiocy for so long before my mind begins to scream in a frantic need to escape. "*It burns, it burns, make it stop.*"

This sheet is another example of what I've begun to refer to as ***Backwards World***. In this case it appears that making assumptions is a positive thing. People who say things that might lead to assumptions are committing microaggressions. So rather than teaching people that assumptions and jumping to conclusions that were not specifically stated is a bad thing they now turn it around on the person who stated or asked something. The assumption is treated as reality.

Looking at that you'll likely come to the conclusion I did that with that type of idiotic education and lack of reasoning you really shouldn't say "*anything at all*" because, any words that flow from your mouth likely could be interpreted as a microaggression. Rather than giving these people a reality check and teaching them the flaw in assuming things they have instead decided that assumptions are okay, and saying anything that someone might assume something bad about is not okay.

It makes me very angry. Though I am not seeking a safe space.

Safe spaces are fictional. Reality exists. No matter where you go you cannot prevent the possibility of reality intruding. Furthermore, your safe space can end up being my shackle. A safe space is letting other people enslave the rest of people due to their own fears. Grow up! Face reality, learn to live in it, rather than trying to remake it into fantasy land.

And now the lovely **virtue signalling**. The wikipedia page has information on this.

![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVQByUK3FQrcjqbyDR4mG32v6a8j5jorgF7BpTbERWfn4/image.png)

I really don't want to delve deeply into virtue signalling at this time. Writing about microaggressions and safe spaces has already left sooty black resin on my mind today.

Longtime personal hypothesis

I've had a pet hypothesis (*one of many*) for years. It actually goes back to my college years. I met quite a few people of different disciplines and would interact with them on a regular basis as I was at the hub of all things computer on my campus back then, and all disciplines seemed to converge there in one way or another. I met some interesting people studying psychology. Some of them were pretty normal. Some of the others seemed to be some of the most disturbed people I had ever met. In fact, I met more disturbed people in that field than I did normal. I only really mingled with that group on this one campus, so I have no way of knowing if this is pretty normal or not.

It kind of goes along with my "*Why Wait?*" revelation that I referred to in other writings. I'd hear a lot of "*When I graduate I'm going to X*" So in a field like psychology and sociology when you graduate if you are like many humans and want to leave a mark, create something, create a legacy, etc. What might you do? As with most things there are easy paths and there are hard paths. Human nature seems to indicate people more often choose the easy path. A lot of these PROBLEMATICAL rules, studies, and new ways to analyze people often seem to me to be the byproduct of someone trying to leave their mark. Often the thing they created was not needed. Sometimes this not needed thing actually proves to be harmful. They needed to leave their mark.

Convincing people that fantasy land is okay, and reality is bad certainly seems to be leaving a mark. It also makes conversation with such people pointless. They are "triggered" (*another term I dislike*) by your virtue signalling, microaggressive invasions of their safe spaces.

***End Rant*** - for today.

Good post as always!
I would add a warning to Never Be Polite! For example if you say "Hello" to the check out girl at the grocery store, you may actually be thought of as flirting, and we cant have that LOL

It truly is creating an environment where the only thing you can do is not speak. Yet some microaggressions are non-verbal. Frowning, smiling, scratching your nose. (EDIT: not smiling too... so you're damned simply by being alive)

I don't give a damn about microaggressions, virtue signaling, and safe spaces at this point. Those terms I'll likely attack with fire as I encounter them.

When I realise I am the victim of microagressions I retreat into my safe space. It is the perfect mental Panic room I created that allows my ENTP nature to truly shine. You may recognise this outwardly by my catatonic stare and the words 'I hate ignorant people that aren't in touch with reality' on repeat.

Heh. :) Say that word as much as you want. Though if you say it too much it loses some of its impact. :)

Sometime try throwing two disgusting but innocent words together as your exclamation. The reaction you'll get will be quite amusing. :)

I say fuck, shit, etc too... generally I do it rare enough to where when I do people that know me know I am truly not happy about something.

I only use cursing for seasoning. You know who is really suffering? Comedians, especially satirists. Basically everything that is said in today's world tastes like plain cooked oatmeal.

I agree with you on the myers-briggs.
Its like comparing right brained with left brained.
Yes, a good proportion of the population are one or the other, but quite a few are both.

And both sides can be learned / improved.

I think the biggest example in my life is when my father took the test, and then commented that all the questions could really only had one answer.

I think I see your point, you do not want assumptions turned into reality. There are many parts of the PDF that could lead there, agreed. However, the PDF does say...

The context of the relationship and situation is critical.

So I think they are talking about circumstances where it is not appropriate.

You may not use a phrase like that without any sort of intention to demean someone. However, I think there are numerous people out there where these assumptions are correct. There are people who are trying to be demeaning and they cover it up poorly. Usually we can tell who these folks are by the nature of our relationship and the context of the situation.

In my own experience, when I was in high school working at an inner city McDonald's, I got my first chances to work around folks with much darker skin. I realized there was one girl there, who did not speak like her peers. So I asked her one day. "You are very well spoken, why don't you speak like the others who work here?" Even I started to pick up a little Ebonics working there so much.

I think she could tell I did not mean any harm, nor was I trying to demean her or anyone else. She could tell I was just another human who had recognized some differences between people who largely, look the same.

She responded, "When I am not at McDonald's or school, I intern at a local doctor's office. As a black, high school student, in a doctor's office, I am watched very closely. There is no way I could speak like that and expect a job there in the future."

I had gotten to know her well enough, so the question did not bother her one bit. She knew exactly what I meant...

I was surrounded by folks who spoke in a certain way due to their culture. Yet if it really was their culture, then it would be discriminatory not to hire them for speaking in their native, cultural tongues. So I would expect a Doctor's office to hire them no matter how they spoke. We certainly hired them at Mcdonald's speaking the way they do but she was happy to clear all of this up. There was simply no way a Doctor's office would hire her unless she was a fairly eloquent speaker, she was breaking some speech habits, and she had no intention of ever going back to them.

Which reminds me of my final example...

If I remember correctly, I think the press got into similar troubles here by saying that Obama was eloquent, and well spoken when he first took office. It was seen as a Microagression and the press stopped saying such things right away, once they were called on it. At Obama's level, we all really need to be respectful, he was the President after all and while many folks did not mean anything bad by it.... I am positive there were some folks out there who were trying to be demeaning by saying it. Having no relationship or context with the president at all, it just didn't sound right... It didn't feel right. They did not want to perpetuate the concept, so they just stopped complimenting Obama on his skills in speech.

My last point... No offense to anyone... I feel that Obama is one of the finest politicians I have ever seen because he speaks more eloquently than any other politician I have ever known in my life.

I don't believe people should be offended. Politician does not need to mean GOOD PERSON, and you didn't imply such.

Obama was skilled at the skills and had the qualities that tend to work well in politics. This included telling people what they wanted to hear while doing something completely different.

You did not take the context into account, not even a tiny little bit.

If someone is making Micro aggressive statements at me, if I can tell it is in-appropriate and our relationship does not support that sort of thing between us...

Then I will get offended. I think you would too.
