What happened on April 18th?

Yankee Stadium opens (1923)

![yankees.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVeobpS9nhqS9canscVKFD1GpcJG1HC6CwBwn33YEP43p/yankees.jpg)

On this date in history, the infamous Yankee Stadium opened. At it’s birth, it had a capacity of 58,000. It was build between 1922 and 1923 and the cost of it to build ($2.4 million or $33.9 million in 2016 dollars) was entirely funded by Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert.

The first game played was the Yankees hosting the Red Sox. It ended in a 4-1 win for the Yankees, with Babe Ruth slugging a three run home run to right field. It was said that the new stadium smelled of “fresh paint, fresh plaster and fresh grass,” smells many might enjoy. When asked what he thought of the stadium, Ruth said “some ball yard.”

In fact, Ruth would play a major role in the ballpark, and Yankees history in general, as Ruth famously became one of the greats of his time and his success with the Yankees helped nickname the stadium “The House That Ruth Built.”

In 2008, Yankee Stadium closed and in 2010, it was demolished.

“There is no news” (1930)

BBC did a news report on this date in 1930. The report was given and it was simply said that “there is no news.” After that, they played 15 minutes of piano.

While one might think the fact that BBC felt this date was not worthy of mentioning any news, it’s interesting to juxtapose that to today. With the array of information that is transferred from technology, social media, etc, there is absolutely no way there wouldn’t be anything to report. It seems that no matter the day, there is something (mostly bad) happening. Even if there was no news, somebody would dig up something about some celebrity to report.

It is just an interesting thing to mention that happened a while back and how the world has changed into what it is today.

Jeff Dunham is born (1962)

If you don’t know who Jeff Dunham is, you’re a dummy. Well, you’re not, that was just a bad joke since Jeff Dunham is a famous comedian known mostly for his ventriloquist work. Time magazine has described all of the his characters and dummies as “…politically incorrect, gratuitously insulting and ill tempered.”

He started performing his acts at small gigs like schools, churches and his job at Six Flags. After a few good breaks, he got his first Comedy Central special for himself only in 2003.

A few of his characters include Walter (a retired, grumpy old man) and Achmed (the skeleton of an incompetent suicide bomber). He has several others and they all possess one or a few certain memorable characteristics and qualities.

Thanks for reading!

Hopefully you learned a thing or two. See you tomorrow!
