Consumerism Is A Failure Of Imagination
Governments are unable to stop profit seeking because they have been taken over by corporations. Lawmakers and CEOs love Greta Thunberg: they want us to consume ourselves to death under the false banner of “green growth”. That is the new model they want to implement... but how smart, and diabolical, is that?

The Conversation article was penned 5 years ago. While still taking monetarism into account, it definitely delivers a rational glimpse at how a money-free society would operate for the betterment of all its individuals. The telegraph.uk, does not fly far as the author is undeniably caught in the paradoxes of capitalism.

### Life in a ‘degrowth’ economy, and why you might actually enjoy it (2014)
> THE CONVERSATION: Degrowth would liberate us from the burden of pursuing material excess. We simply don’t need so much stuff – certainly not if it comes at the cost of planetary health, social justice, and personal well-being. Consumerism is a gross failure of imagination, a debilitating addiction that degrades nature and doesn’t even satisfy the universal human craving for meaning.

Yes, consuming is addictive since the brain is wired to feel pleasure and empowerment when spending. Just look at the TV commercials, they all are about that: an impression of freedom associated with money itself.

> This would be a way of life based on modest material and energy needs but nevertheless rich in other dimensions – a life of frugal abundance. It is about creating an economy based on sufficiency, knowing how much is enough to live well, and discovering that enough is plenty.

It will all comes down to adapt our lifestyle to holistic science, and that can be taught in elementary schools already. Obesity rate and all other chronic diseases would for sure decrease drastically, because people would access top quality produces and be so much more relaxed to handle all life matters.

> We do not need to purchase so many new clothes. Let us mend or exchange the clothes we have, buy second-hand, or make our own. In a degrowth society, the fashion and marketing industries would quickly wither away. A new aesthetic of sufficiency would develop, where we creatively re-use and refashion the vast existing stock of clothing and materials, and explore less impactful ways of producing new clothes.

Hemp is back into the picture big time, and it is now possible to end most synthetic fabrics. That would free the slaves working for fast fashion and textile industry alike, and thus would pave the way toward the end of all petroleum byproducts.

> We would become radical recyclers and do-it-yourself experts. This would partly be driven by the fact that we would simply be living in an era of relative scarcity, with reduced discretionary income.

Monetarism drives scarcity. End money and abundance ensues. Working less would imply plenty of time to learn new skills, or even go back to school. Capitalism prevents that because everybody must stay on the "railtracks" after 35 years of age, work and consume. On the other end, we'd be all living in well insulated and comfortable housing. And most likely, big cities'd become giant vertical farms because suburbs would expand and people prefer to have (or tend) a garden.

### This climate strike is a joke. Childish socialism won't help the environment (21 swpt 2019)
> THE TELEGRAPH.UK: The environment needs protecting and the idealism of some of the protesters is admirable. But the climate strike is a joke. Its story is that all the problems in the world stem from the greed of the West: capitalism and industry have ruined the planet and only a revolution will put things right. Westerners must atone; they must purge themselves of fossil fuels and embrace socialism.

Indeed Greta does not say it all. Of course it is not just the West but most of Asia, which hosts the biggest environmental offenders ever. All fast fashion brands have their multinationals and sweatshops located there. The West has become for the most part a "junk sale department" , 85% of what we buy comes from Asia and Latin America... and soon Africa where slave wages are even cheaper.

> Their Luddite war on capitalism would raise prices, see workers sacked, lead to power shortages in the West, and destroy the incentive to innovate. It would also condemn people in poorer countries to subsistence farming. Eco-socialism amounts to rich people insisting that the Third World remains stuck in the past – because it looks prettier to the Western eye.

If we stick to monetarism, yes, that is the very likely scenario. If capitalism continues, we are also doomed nonetheless. The author has not yet figured out that capitalism means "taking more out that what is put in" and therefore unsustainable. And that's the drive behind our various ecocides.

We waste too much and our waste becomes pollution. And we cannot afford to recycle because it would reduce corporate profits. So we are doomed to consume until we drop dead and earth completely depleted.

But if we'd get rid of money, collaboration, integrity and trust would take over as the new currencies... helping us muddle through as smoothly as possible...

It's quite hard to live a holistic lifestyle in the tyrannical corporate western world because of state and corporations have made it a fascistic society. The whole system is made to enslave our minds and make us productive units that serve the state and company overlords.

Scarcity is a fact of our reality. "Monetarism" doesn't cause it. Creating or destroying money doesn't change the amount of resources on the earth. Deal with it.

(Every time I see a video of Greta, I throw a plastic straw into the ocean)
