Among the village’s most honored and respective elders, was Othieno, a short dark-skinned man with a wrinkled but young face. He was no mere man; he was the mouth piece of the gods, small but mighty.
It is said that he had the power of over the sun, which is a sovereign power over everything; for in it seasons are made, darkness and light are. It is also said he had power over the moon and the stars and could call thunder or rain calm a storm or stoop a flood.
He however seldom practiced his power even at need. It was a mystery, but also a way of wisdom. The people never dared to ask. And it had to do with faith in the way of the gods. Such ways all agreed were beyond carnal mind questioning.
It was Othieno who intervened and calmed the people’s anger. “His coming is not by accident, neither is our meeting. There are questions to be asked and answers to be sought for. Together we shall try and find answers my people,” he shouted as he made his way through the crowd.
He nonetheless stopped at this and would not say more because on the day before Gimera arrived he had seen a vision. In the vision he saw the sky was brighter but soon it faded and became dark.
He feared for his Devine wisdom which made him see beyond human insight made him understand that there would come darkness after the light. Could this man’s message be the light that would precede the darkness? He thought in silence. But he did not want to speak about it; it was not yet the right time.
“I will first consult with the gods before this mans fate can be sealed,” He said to himself. Gimera was seized and held captive in a cage. However the next morning he was mysteriously gone, he had done his part; he had delivered his message.
Gimera’s message created fear and tension a midst the people, but was received with mixed opinions. Some said the world was coming to an end. Some said the man was merely up to some mission, probably an evil spirit that had come to trick them to leave the island and die on the open lake.
Some wondered why Othieno the mouth piece of the gods hadn’t told them the truth they needed to know about the authenticity of this man’s message, but Othieno kept his silence.
Othieno wondered why the gods would choose to deliver such a message through a stranger. He was not only the mouth piece of the gods; he was the voice of the gods. He had tried in vain to consult the gods on Gimera’s issue but all his efforts where futile. But time and time he saw Gimera in a dream, pleading with him to please save the people by making them believe the truth.
Othieno however shared in the opinion of those who believed that may be this was an evil spirit that was sent on a mission to trick them to die on the open lake. Because even if it was true the island was going to sink, where would they run to?
To him it was stupid to think that there was any dry land apart from theirs. To him that was fiction. No, he would wait on the gods to speak to him and would not give up until they did. But of course Othieno should have known that the God’s were already speaking to him through Gimera, and more, that he was indeed doubting the voice of the gods themselves!!!
One bright evening Othieno sat under a huge mahogany tree staring at the sun sinking beneath the hills. One could tell it was not well with his soul by the sad look on his face.
He had a lot of questions unanswered. “Could it be that the gods have deserted Me.” he thought to himself, marveling at the beautiful sunset sky.
It was a spectacle he always enjoyed watching, the rising and setting, and everything in between as the sun smiled away through the sky - that was how life had always been on this island. If Gimera’s words were true, it meant the end of all that. “The gods forbid!!” Othieno swore.
Lost in thought, from a distance Othieno made up a picture of a young gentle man coming towards him. It was Obirase his beloved and only son.
Obirase, on getting closer, saw something unusual on his fathers face and inquired: father, anything bothering you.”
“Son, that spirit’s message.” Othieno answered, staring ahead of him and away into blank space.
”Father you’re the mouth piece of the gods. Why don’t you consult with them and get the right answers, everyone is waiting on you.”
“I have tried son, but in vain. They won’t talk to me. It seems they have deserted us.” Othieno said, disappointedly shaking his head.
But his teenage son disagreed, “No father, it can’t be true,” Obirase said, and after a moment of silence, as if finally comprehending the truth, added: “what if the mans words are true? What if he is a revelation from the gods? Think about if farther”.
He now sat on a log looking right into Othieno’s face. But trust Othieno to remain adamant! Never in their history had a message been revealed to them from the gods through a stranger; he, Othieno, was the mouth piece of the gods.
