Steemit is a steem based social platform with a difference. Yes, with a difference because people get paid for the contents they posted. A well written article or post of any sort that is appealing to readers can get people's upvote, resteem, and comment. These upvotes turn to money based on the voting power of the voter. On the other hand, a post may get disapproval from readers if the author violates copyright laws. Lifting and pasting other people's work without properly referencing amounts to plagiarism and may get down vote or flagged.

Survival On Steemit

It is an uphill task to survive on steemit. It requires hardwork, persistence, and passion for reading and writing to excel on steemit. 
Hardworking is a necessity because it takes a hardworking person to write on what people will appreciate. A good work is a product of good research. Steemians who know their stuff spend time to produce post that can capture people's interests whether they like it or not.
Another thing that is needed is persistence. This is a virtue exercised by every successful businessman. Without patience and consistency, people run from one business to another without success. They move out of their businesses at every point they feel the business is not moving. Most attimes, people abandon their business at the point of breaking even.
Finally, no one succeeds in what he or she does not have passion for. Passion for reading and writing makes difference on steemit.

The Three Stages On Steemit

There are three stages in every business and they are also obtainable on steemit. These stages are:
* No profit stage
* Break even stage
* Profit making stage

At the inception of every business, no good businessman expects profit at the moment. It takes time to create awareness and  build customer base. At the moment, the business may be running on loss, and there is nothing wrong with that. Every potential business entity experiences hard beginning. Good things don't come easy, they say.
So what is needed is patience and persistence. The no profit stage has no particular timeline, but does not last forever.
This knowledge is hundred percent applicable on steemit. At inception as a newbie, you have no fan. Your style of writing is not known to people. So no one takes interest on your post. When you enquire the number of people who have seen your post after five days of posting, you will be amazed, three, six or ten, usually minnows like you whose 20 upvote cannot give you up to $0.50
So what one does is to build fan base. An Igbo adage is truly applicable here, onye nwere madu, nwere ego. He who has multitude of people is wealthy.

At a time in the life of a business, breaking of even is experienced. The business neither makes profit nor incur loss. The business begins to sustain itself as the cost equals the sales. This is a sign of great things to come.
On steemit, one comes to a stage whereby returns on steemit will begin to offset one's data bill. The steemian in question will begin to make average earning of $3 per post. No much return is made, but bills on account of steemit platform are paid. This period has no timeline also, but cannot last forever.

The profit making stage is a product of a reasonably large size of customer base. Having consistently offered acceptable services to people, the business trust is built. And profit making becomes inevitable
So also on steemit, at a time your hello turns into three digits of dollar. This is because of already established legacy which turns one's steemit account name into a household name.
