Let me take you to the boat ride we took in The Zaanse Schans.  Sit tight as our captain take us travelling back in time.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH: Vandaag, neem ik jou naar een boottocht bij de Zaanse. Ga still zitten want wij gaan naar een tijdreis!

We bumped into it just at the left side of the Orse Ket aan't Glop  souvenir shop when you're facing the mills. The souvenir shop was built in 1717 and had first served as a liquor shop.  Before that it was an orphanage and was rumored to be a haunted house.  We went in it after the boat ride.  Keep reading to see what's in it.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH: Rederij de Schans kan je vinden aan de linkerkant van de Orse Ket aan't Glop - een souvenir winkel.  De winkel was in 1717 gebouwd en was eigenlijk vroeger een weeshuis. Toen waren mensen bang om daar in te gaan - het was namelijk een spookhuis. Later werd het een likeur huis maar nu is het een souvenir winkel.  Lees verder en ik laat je zien wat er in zitten.

We had a very jolly Captain of the Rederij De Schans who speaks English and Dutch.  The boat goes around every hour.  We took the 15:00 after going around the mills on foot.  We're not much in the boat, just a few tourists who are mostly couples and a bunch of kids.  It was hot so as you could see on the pic above we bought us a drink in the bar at the back.  Behind the bar is a roofless deck which the captain offered us but we decided to stay in the shade.  The boat has no air conditioner ...rather ... it was more of  "aircon - tinuous".  ;D

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:  Onze kapitein is heel gezellig.  Hij is tweetalig en spreek vloeiend Engels en Nederlands.  De boot vaart rond elk uur.  Wij namen die van 15:00 nadat wij naar de molen geweest waren.  Niet te veel toeristen kwamen met ons mee - een paar stelletjes met hun kinderen.  Het was heel heet dus wij bestelden drankjes bij de bar achter zoals je op de foto daar boven kan zien. Daarachter was nog zonniger maar wij kiezen voor de schaduw.  De boot heeft geen airco - maar wel "air- continuous."  :D


The captain welcomed us all and explained that the place is called The Zaanse Schans because more than four hundred years ago, governor Diederik Van Sonoy had a bulwark - "schans" in Netherish built to protect them from the Spanish troops.  Now, it's the most famous tourist spot in The Netherlands.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH: Onze kapitein gaf ons een warm welkom en ons tochtje was  begonnen. Hij vertelde ons hoe de Zaanse Schans aan zijn naam komt.  Meer dan vier honderd jaar geleden liet governor Diederik Van Sonoy een schans opwerpen tegen de Spaanse troepen.  Nu is het meest beroemde toeristische plek in het hele Nederlands.

We went on a slow ride as if he wanted us to savor every detail about each mill.  The first mill was a saw mill called De Gekroonde Poelenburg.  It was rumored that it looked like the coats of a German timber merchant and that's how it got its name.  It was built in 1869, the wind drives its saw blades to saw timbers into boards and planks. 

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:  Langzaam voeren wij langs de molens als of hij wilde dat wij alles dat hij ons vertelde over de trotse stilstaande molen goed kunnen onthouden.  De eertse is een houtzaagmolen die De Gekroonde Poelenburg genoemd.  Verondersteld was de houtzaagmolen aan zijn naam kwam omdat het op een jas van een Duitse houthandelaar uit de Pfalz- leek .  Het was in 1869 gebouwd om houtjes te zagen.

The second mill is a paint mill called De Kat meaning The Cat.  It manufactures paint and pigments which artists and painting restorers use all over the world. It was built in 1964 and is still working properly which I find awesome!  De miller sometimes shows a demo on what he does to people who are willing to pay the entrance fee.  You also get a bonus of going up the mill and see a different view of the Schans. 

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:  De volgoende is een verfmolen - De Kat. Tot nu toe vervaardigt dit molen verf en pigmenten die door kunstenaars en restaurateurs overall de wereld gebruiken.  Soms laat de molen eigenaar de touristen een demonstratie over oude verftechnieken - zien. Daar moet je wel wat betalen en krijg je ook aan andere beeld van de Zaanse Schans.  



The third mill is an oil mill called De Bonte Hen.  People believe that this mill has a guardian angel because it has survived several ligtning strikes.  There used to be 600 mills in the Zaanse but most of them were burned due to lightning strikes but De Bonte Hen has survived a great lot of them and so they believed it has his own guardian angel.  Interesting isn't it?  It's now 323 years old.  Which year do you think was it built?

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:   De derde is een oliemolen - De Bonte Hen genoemd.  Verondersteld heeft dit molen een beschermengel.  Hij heeft veel blikseminslagen overleefd.  Toen waren er 600  molens in de Schans vroeger maar waren door de eigenaars opgegeven door blikseminslagen die brand veroorzaken hadden. Deze molen is nu 323 jaar oud - op welke jaar denk je was hij gebouwd?

Next to it is another oil mill called De Zoeker - in English - The Seeker.  This runs on a smockmill and was built using recycled materials from old mills.  Nobody knows exactly how old it is.  In the 17th century this mill was actually in Zaandijk and was just brought to the Zaanse in 1968 since the rail work project was going to surely need it's original place.  This mill had helped in keeping the Beemsterpolder dry back in 1600 when it was still in Zaandijk.  This mill has manufactured oil, paint and cocoa.  That explains the chocolaty scent lingering in the river. It makes you crave for one cold chocomel - a Netherish's traditional chocolate milk.  

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:  Het volgoende is ook een oliemolen - De Zoeker.  Hij was uit gebruikte onderdelen samengesteld.  Niemand weet hoe oud dit molen is.  In de 17de eeuw stond hij toen in Zaandijk.  Later, werd hij opgetild en overgeplaats in de Zaanse Schans want zijn ouwe plek werd een deel van een spoor gemaakt.  Voordat had hij nog de Beemsterpolder in 1600 droog gemalen .  Dit molen vervaardigt olie, verf en cacao - dat verklaart de geur die rond het river blijven gangen.  Ik begon al chocomel te lusten.

Next to that is another sawmill called Het Jonge Schaap.  Translation : The Lamb.  It was built as a replica of the mill that used to be in West Zaandam in 1942.  This replica just got done in 2007.  His the youngest among all the mills.
TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:  Naast De Zoeker is een houtzagmolen - Het Jonge Schaap.  Het is maar gewoon een replica van een oude station die  toen in 1942, in West Zaandam stond .  Hij is net klaar in 2007. Hij is het jongste van alle molens.

Next to it is a "headless" mill.  It used to be a spice mill.  It's named "The Huisman" and has stood there since 1956.  It has lost it's cap and mill but it used to produce mustard which was imported in the whole world.  Snuff were also produced here back then and later - spices.  A few years ago it has been turned into a residence. 

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:  Naast hem is een molen zonder kop.  Het was vroeger een specerijenmolen - De Huisman genoemd.  Hij is onthoofd maar vroeger maakte hij mosterd die de hele wereld geexporteerd waren.  Snuif waren eerst hier geproduceerd en later - specerijen. Tegenwoordig is hij aals een woning is gebruikt.


We went further and passed by traditional Netherish houses and the chocolaty smell just kept getting stronger and that's because we were approaching a chocolate factory.  

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:  Wij varen verder langs een traditionale Nederlandse woning en ik merkte dat de chocola geur die rond hangen sterker werd - wij naderen een chocolade fabriek - daarom dus!

Then the captain said - to your left you'll see a building called De Adelaar meaning The Eagle.  It used to be a soap factory but now a clothing company called Vanilla is renting the space.  I noticed a rusty metallic shark art piece hanging with its head upside down in the cafe next to it.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH: Toen zei onze kapitein - aan je linkerkant is De Adellar. Vroeger was het een zeepziederij - dit woord had ik toen net geleerd.  Nu is een kleding maker met de naam Vanilla dit pand gebruikt.  Een rustige metallische kunsttuk die op een haai lijkt ...die op zijn kop  gehangen is - viel mijn oog op.


We passed by another house with a windmill on it.  It's a residence - is all I heard.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH: Wij passeerden nog een andere molen.  Het is een woning - zei onze kapitein.

  Then we had to go through a bridge.  As we were nearing it - it looked as if the roof of the boat would scratch the bridge but not really.  However, the gap is pretty thin between the bridge and the roof of the boat.  People waved and greeted us from above and we greeted back from below.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH: Toen moesten wij door een brug voeren.  Als de boot de brug nadert leek het als op de dak van het boot zal het bodem van de brug krassen zal maar niet echt.  Het was wel krap ik kan de bodem van de brug aanraken als ik op een van de bootstoelen zal staan.  Mensen te fiets begroeten ons van boven.  Wij gaven de groeten terug.

A few meters away from the bridge, The Rederij de Schans turned around to let us take a good look of the traditional houses nestled on the other side of the river bank which were built back between the 17th and the 18th century.  My! Even my grand nana wasn't born in those years yet.  They give Zaanse Schans a more picturesque appeal.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:  Een paar meters nog draaide de Rederij De Schans zich om en liet ons wat erfgoed van huizen die tussen de 17de en de 18de eeuw gebouwd waren - zien.  Wauw - gewoon wauw!  Mijn oma was toen ook nog niet geboren. Zij maken de Schans aantrekkelijker.

We passed through another bridge and the boat turns around so we're going back.  We passed by a tea house near the bridge.  Plenty of teenagers we're swimming into the river.  It was quite a sunny day, I wanted to take a dip as well.  

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH: Aan het einde passeerden wij het kantelbare brug en opnieuw draaide de boot om terug naar de souverir winkel te kunnen.  Wij voeren langs een thee huisje naarst de kantelbare brug waarin veel jongeren aan het zwemmen waren.  Het was toen bloedheet -  ik wilde ook in het water springen om te kunnen afkoelen.

Then we passed by that small souvenir shop called Tinnegieterij De Tinkoepel.  I could see cute artsy Netherish tea cups with blue paintings on them which has a cow, a kissing couple on a Dutch costume or tulips.  A traditional Netherish Ceramic subject design.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH: Daarna voeren wij langs een kleiner souvenir winkel de Tinnegieterij De Tinkoepel genoemd.  Vanuit het boot kon ik wat schattige theekopjes met Nederlandse keramische traditionale tekening - de Nederlandse koe, een kussende stelletjes dat een Nederlandse kostuum draagt of tulpen.

Next to it were the two museums, Albert Hein and The Zaanse Tijd and the Koopmanshuis beside it.  

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH: Naast hem zijn de Musea De Zaanse Tijd,  Albert Hein en de Koopmanshuis.

Then the restaurant called De Hoop op d' Swarte Walvis or The Hope of the Black Whale fish which looks like the second pic on the other side.  We had coffee there after the boat ride.  We passed by the bed and breakfast Heerlijck Slapen next then the hotel bustling with tourist having a drink or probably eating, too in the resto part of it by the river bank.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:   Daarna kwamen wij tegen De Hoop op d' Swarte Walvis die zoals de tweede foto daaronder eruit ziet aan de andere kant.    Daar hadden we na de boottochtje coffee gehad .  Wij passeerden daarna de achterkant van het bed en breakfast - Heerlijck Slapen  waarin veel touristen in de restaurant waren ... aan de uitzicht aan de andere kant van de rivier zichzelf vermaken tussen etentjes en drankjes.

And finally we get to see the back of the  Orse Ket aan't Glop  souvenir shop.

The captain bid us all goodbye and wished us a fun time in The Zaanse Schans then thank us for taking the boat ride.  We gave him our loudest applause for doing a great job driving the boat safely while explaining everything to us in Netherish and English.  And they say men can't multitask.  No wonder he got much tips from us all in the klomp - wooden shoe lying on the dashboard of the boat.  Off we went to the  Orse Ket aan't Glop souvenir shop.  Look at what I found in there.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:   Toen, zei onze kapitein zijn gedag.  Wij gaven hem een grotte applaus voor zijn prestatie.  Ik ben onder de indruk dat hij zo goed kan multitasken.  Er is zon vooroordeel dat mannen dat niet kunnen.  Hij had veel fooien gekregen op zijn tip klompen die ligt op de dashboard van het boot.  Ik ging direct naar de Orse Ket aan't Glop toe, kijk wat ik er allemaal gevonden hebt.

We headed back to our car but we got distracted when we saw tourists coming out of the garden in front of the Hope of the Black Whale fish resto so we asked where they came from.  They told us to go over the bridge near the clearing and it'll take us where they've been. So we did.

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:   Wij wilde terug naar onze auto gaan maar een paar touristen hebben ons aandacht gekregen. Zij kwamen uit een bijzondere tuin tegenover de restaurant De Hoop op d' Zwaarte Walvis.  Zij vertelden ons om over de brug daar bij de ingang te gaan dan kunnen wij ook zien wat zij gezien hadden. Dat deden wij dus. Dit is wat wij daar zagen.

I saw chickens in front of the house in the nook.  They look like chicks.  I heard their mama calling so I looked around and found the whole family.  Unlike the ducks who'd walk towards you when they see you these chickens were aloof.  The ducks in The Netherlands are used to being feed by people so when you are carrying a plastic bag and a group of ducks walk towards you while walking near the small swamp like water part between houses and the main road.  Don't panic - they're not going to bully you.  They just think you've got food for them.  I love that about them here. 

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:   Toen kwam ik tegen een paar kippetjes in een huisje op het einde.  Ik hoor zijn moeder roepen en toen heb ik de hele familie gevonden.  Vergelijk met eenden zijn de kippen afzijdig.  Zij liepen weg maar ik heb toch een paar fotos gescoord.

We headed back to our car in the parking lot. It was 30 degrees that day - scorching hot but we really had fun going around the Schans.  I'm just thankful for the ancestors of the Netherish folks for keeping such traditional heritage alive for me to admire. So you think you've been there just from reading this?  I've only told you 1/4 of the beauty that lies in there! Come see for yourself!  It's just awesome!

TRANSLATION IN NETHERISH:   Toen was het tijd om naar huis te gaan. 30 graden was gloeiend heet maar wij hadden echt van ons uitje bij de Schans genoten. Ik ben wel dankbaar van alle grootouders van de Nederlandse volk die zon erfgoed daar allemaal goed onderhouden hebben dat ik hun tot nu toe en veel mensen nog vanuit de hele wereld mogen hun bewonderen.  Mischien denk u dat u ben er al geweest want ik heb al een heleboel verteeld maar dat is maar een vierteltje van de rijkdom die daar ligt.  Kom dan ook ze bewonderen! Wirklich sehr wunderschön!
