The World Glaucoma week 2018 is on and started from the 11th to 17th March.  The activities of this week alerts the public to have constant eye and optic nerve screening to discover glaucoma earlier and ensure preservation of sight.  [Ref](https://www.wgweek.net/about-world-glaucoma-week/). 

Glaucoma causes slow and steady damage to vision. It is said that an early detection slows down the progression of glaucoma. 

Glaucoma is a disease common with people of the age 40 years and above. Glaucoma causes eye blindness. This ailment from discoveries has no cure but can only be managed. I used to think there is a cure for this ailment but learnt it doesn't have a cure and can only be treated to stop further spread or damages. The damage caused before detection cannot be changed. 

Glaucoma is said to be common with matured people of the age 40 and above. People of this age should take cognisance of this and ensure regular eye tests to prevent eventual blindness.  

**What to do to prevent this?** 

- Regular eye test: This is the only way to detect glaucoma early enogh and be free from its effects. We should make sure we go for regular eye check up. 
- If diagnosed,  seek treatment: The treatment of this disease will only stop the spread and will not remove the damage already caused by it.  But your treating it will go a long way to prevent it from worsening. 
- Enlightenment:  Most people are not aware of this ailment and especially Africans and Nigerians in specific that attributes things of this kind to demons or a curse from the village. Informing the public about the existence of glaucoma will go a long way to bring people to consciousness of its existence and treatment. 

We should ensure we go for regular eye screening expecially those above the age of 40. Prevention its said to be better than cure.
