Teaching guide on Least Common Multiple with exercises
**Subject:** Mathematics
**Topic:** Least Common Multiple (L.C.M)
**Period:** Single
**Time:** 45 Minute
**Date:** May 12, 2020

**Behavioural Objectives:**
At the end of the lesson, the learners should know the multiples of different number when asked.

**Introduction**

**Presentation**

**Step 1:**
**Multiples of 2** are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, .....
**Multiples of 3** are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, ....
**Multiples of both** 2 and 3 are 6 and 12, ....
They are called Common Multiples of 2 and 3

***Step 2: What do we mean by Multiples?***
When we say multiples of a number, A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by an integer (not a fraction).

The meaning of a multiple is the product result of one number multiplied by another number.

**An example is 3:** Any number that three divides evenly or any number for which 3 is a factor. For a number to be divided "evenly" by three the answer must be a whole number with no remainders. So, 27 is a multiple of 3 since 27 / 3 = 9 (9 is a whole number), but 25 is not since 25 / 3 = 8 + a remainder of 1.

Our interest is on the smallest common multiple of two or more numbers. The smallest common multiple is called the **Least Common Multiple (L.C.M)**

**Examples:**

1. Find the L.C.M. of 2 and 3

**Multiples of 2 are** 2, 4, **6**, 8, 10, **12**, 14, 16, **18**,......
**Multiples of 3 are** 3, **6**, 9, **12**, 15, **18**, 21, 14, 27,.....
**Common Multiples** of 2 and 3 are 6, 12, 18,
**The Least Common Multiple** (L.C.M) of 2 and 3 is **6**.

2.Find the L.C.M. of 3 and 4

**Multiples of 3 are** 3, 6, 9, **12**, 15, 18, 21, **24**, 27, 30....
**Multiples of 4 are** 4, 8, **12**, 16, 20, **24**, 28, 32, 36, 40...
**Common Multiples** of 3 and 4 are 12, 24,...
**The Least Common Multiple** (L.C.M) of 3 and 4 is **12**.

**Exercise**
Find the L.C.M of the following:

1. 2 and 5
2. 2 and 6
3. 3 and 8
4. 4 and 7
5. 3 and 9

Write down 6 multiples of each of the following:
1. 5
2. 6
3. 7
4. 9
5. 11
