Messy neighbour

<center>The pompom tree (as I call it) is a messy one! There is a few of them growing on our street. I love them!  and I don't mind them being messy at all. 
They grow huge, have nice big leaves that change the colour in the fall and produce those little balls. They are lovely green in summer with little thorns, a bit like a round cactus or chestnut.</center>

<center>And then when the winter comes all that starts falling, the little fruits turn brown and look like mysterious openwork decoration.</center>

<center>The ground is covered in them and I am pretty sure the seeds will feed little buggers, birds and other creatures until spring.
Anybody knows what this tree is called?</center>

We have a tree in the back yard that produces little balls like in your picture. It is a Sweet Gum tree and is beautiful in the fall.
