Czech Elections – Liberalism vs. Totality at Its best: What Will Our Future Be
## Brief history
---
Four years have passed since the last elections in the Czech Republic and it was that time again this weekend. Let me try to briefly sum up our political history. Ever since the revolution there were basically the same political parties with very similar people. Our country was split into left ([ČSSD]( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czech_Social_Democratic_Party)) and right([ODS]( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civic_Democratic_Party_(Czech_Republic))) fractions. The very same parties were just switching the leadership roles every four years and the situation in our country was ever-degrading, but at least we had some kind of freedom. The situation before the elections though implied that things were about to change.
## The definition of win/lose situation

#### The winner

[Source]( http://www.jiskra-benesov.cz/clanek/benesovsky-okres-ovladlo-ano-2011-3605)

And it really had. For the first time ever the lead left political party is below 10%, while being replaced by ANO. ANO is rightish political party led by a former active member of communistic party (pre revolution era) [Andrej Babiš]( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrej_Babi%C5%A1). They have not only won the elections, but won them with enormous 30% of all the votes. The problem with ANO is that it’s rather totalitarian Democratic Party. Last year they have for example started an EET (electronic evidence of transactions) and have forced all the service providing entities to buy the apparatus and run the system not to avoid taxes. I see why it’s important for state to hinder people’s ability to avoid taxes, but doing it through such a totalitarian way is just nowhere close to freedom from my perspective. Such attitude is unsupportable.
#### The totalitarian runner up

[Source]( http://www.spd.cz/ke-stazeni)

Even bigger disgrace is, that populistic, xenophobic, radical person that wants to UNLAW Islam, [Tomio Okamura]( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomio_Okamura) has won 10% of all the votes to his party SPD. Throughout numerous interviews and discussions I’ve seen him in, he was not able to stay coherent and without violent or hateful rhetoric for more than few minutes. I’m startled by the fact that he was so hugely supported.
#### The opposition

[Source]( https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ob%C4%8Dansk%C3%A1_demokratick%C3%A1_strana)

Second position, with 13%, has been secured by ODS, which is conservative right party. I’m generally for anything that doesn’t propose taking even more capital from those that earn more and giving it to parasites so I’m not too worried about this. Truth is though that ODS had several years to make some good visible changes in our country. And when I say several it’s actually two DECADES. I would never support someone who had that much time to make an impact and haven’t really managed to do so. We just needed a change, a libertarian change to be more precise because ANO just doesn’t cut it.
#### Czech Pirate Party to the rescue

In order to achieve change, new parties full of enthusiasm have to be selected first. I have been eligible for voting only twice and both times Pirates were the only rational decision for me. This year we have finally made it into the parliament with 11% of all the votes! Not only they work tirelessly to make everything transparent and to “hunt down” all the corrupted elements of the government, but they also want to finally make our e-government work. Those are all aspects that every functioning government has to have nowadays and the more we wait the worse for our country.
## What now?
---
The country will now go through a war between totalitarian and liberal parties. I’m worried that there will not be room for the liberal parties to make those necessary changes, but rather the unification of liberal parties will have to happen in order to oppose the totalitarian movements. The totalitarian parties though have a huge advantage that will be hard to oppose.

What’s even more frustrating is that around 50% of all the people that voted are unable to think logically and have no information literacy at all. Babiš who has stolen huge amount of money already, has been caught to discuss it through phone and is currently under investigation receives 30%. Then Okamura who can only hate and never brings anything of any intellectual value (if you don’t count extermination of Islamists) received 10%. I always knew that people are not clever, but that was clearly an understatement. Our freedom is at stake.

I’m (clearly) no political scientist. I’m just trying to convey first hand news that have just happened here. Is there similar situation in your country, or have you already been through similar situation? How did it end? Or just share the current political situation in your country if you will.

Ahoj, je smutné, jak jsou lidi nepoučitelní a stále věří slibům demagogů.
