A crank is something I’m not turning. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis with lots of damage to my wrists and hands. Anything that might “give” when I try to turn it is off limits.

I open bottles with my teeth. I open doors with my forearms. I don’t pick up purses by the straps. I don’t use a cell phone. On and on we go. Who knows what a crank might take out of me and I’m not going to even try.

My hands are used for keyboards only. I am thankful that it does not hurt me to type 95% of the time. Sometimes the mouse is hard, but usually I can type at my normal slow-ish speed. If I can’t type, I can’t work, so I protect my hands like a surgeon.

My wrists were bad even before I got arthritis. I come from Canada, a place where crazy people think nothing of icing down the backyard for the winter to make a skating and hockey rink. The rink stays frozen for the whole winter and they use the garden hose to get the ice just the way they want it.

Then they force you to bundle up and go out there in the freezing cold at anytime of the day or night and skate “for exercise” because you are fat. I was fat at 4, and 5, and 6, and 7, and every year until 50. I escaped from Canada in my late teens and have not skated again.

I fell on the ice at least one million times as a child and was rushed to the ER a few times each winter with what might be broken wrists, but were always swollen and severe sprains. My wrists would swell up like balloons when my fat weight fell onto them "the wrong way", so everyone always thought I broke them.

Some of my earliest memories are in hospitals going through all the steps to be checked, X-rayed, and bandaged up for a week or two. I was always happy to be in the hospital because I was not out freezing in the cold, being teased for being fat and not able to skate, and about to fall on my hands and wrists again.
