<p><div class="text-justify">This is Frank Zappa’s second solo album, dedicated to his newborn son Dweezil, and the first one since he broke up the original Mother of Invention line-up in 1969. The only member from that band that appears here is the multi-instrumentalist Ian Underwood, the main musical collaborator. All tracks are composed by Zappa and are instrumental, except the bluesy rock “Willie the Pimp”, in which Captain Beefheart is the singer.</div></p>

<p><div class="text-justify">Because the album consists of jazz-rock compositions with plenty of room for extensive unconventional solos, the music is very different from the one he recorded with his previous group, which focused on vocal songs with satirical lyrics. His merit consists of mixing sophisticated jazz arrangements with rock’s unbridled attitude. The main innovation in this album is Zappa’s virtuosity with the electric guitar. In addition to his distorted tones in the blues riffs, we discover his ability as a melodist in his prime, even playing whole pieces.</div></p>

<p><div class="text-justify">Four of the songs contain complicated patterns made with multiple overdubs by Ian Underwood, who performs several musicians’s interventions superimposing them, with saxophone, flute, clarinet, piano and organ sections. “Peaches en Regalia” has become a jazz fusion standard and is one Zappa’s most popular songs. “Son of Mr. Green Genes” is an instrumental version of “Mr. Green Genes” from <em>Uncle Meat</em> in which we can hear intricate passages from the wind section. “The Gumbo Variations” is a jam session between Underwood on sax, Zappa on guitar and Don “Sugarcane” Harris on electric violin. In summary, Zappa created an album of excellent technical and musical quality using advanced recording equipment.</div></p>
