From the album <em>In A Silent Way</em> (1969).</div></p> <p><div class="text-justify">The success that Jimmy Hendrix was having playing rock in the late 1960s became a challenge for Miles Davis, who watched how he overtook jazz, which remained stuck in the past, and how the clubs that gave life to it were closing down. But for Davis jazz wasn’t an end in itself, but a form of expression, and that was where his freedom resided. From 1967 to 1969 he was breaking with the orthodoxy of jazz until ending up with <em>In A Silent Way</em>. The sonata form is a musical structure consisting of three parts: an exposition, a development and a re-exposition (exposition with variations) that has been used frequently since the mid-18th century. Producer Teo Macero, using typical rock methods, edited and arranged different parts of the recording session with three hours of improvisations to produce the album as a surgeon with a hypnotic and fascinating effect. It produced controversy between jazz and rock critics, that in both fields were divided due to its experimental musical structure and its electric approach. The album owes almost as much to the improvisation techniques developed by rock musicians in previous years as to Davis’s jazz training.
