Most likely the last days of the garden for the season.

Mid 20s F is a bit too cold for the plants.

Last night I had to cover the beans since it got pretty cold. The rain yesterday made for a much harder frost/freeze overnight as the moisture had not had time to dissipate so everything was still soggy as the temps fell. I spent a part of the evening picking every last tomato that was on the plants and then after dinner in the dark I picked every last summer squash. 43 pounds of squash is sitting in the cooler now as I decide what to do with it. Not sure if I want to sell it or keep it for us as this is about the only squash we have gotten to keep this season since everything sells before I even pick it.

When I woke up this morning at 5:30am the temp online said 25F and then 2.5 hours later it shows 21F. My thermometer out front reads 28F on porch so mid 20s is probably a good guess for the temp in the open air of the garden. I did not cover 3 rows of beans but they are the ones that have already kicked off and stopped producing, 2 rows of purple Velour and a row of Jade. The Velour are going to be changed out next year as they just don't produce enough through the year to make them worth keeping in my rotation. The color is nice but I need a better growing bean for higher production.

One bonus of winter temps hitting is the seasonal movement of the house plants. I have been able to keep my transplanted Rosemary from my childhood home alive over summer and once I brought it
inside the house last week it decided to bloom for me! I am extremely happy to finally have living parts of the MONSTROUS plants I grew up with. Just look at the size of the main plant!!!

In case you are unable to judge the size from the picture above here is the dimensions overlaid on it. 25 feet long by 10 feet wide as it flows down the hill. The plants are well over 30 years old at this point and in the spring time they become one giant mass of buzzing from the masses of bees that cover it and the flowers.

With the freezes I will soon be having to strip the garden of all plants, mulch, irrigation, and detritus before the the major cold hits and the ground freezes solid. Hopefully I still have another couple of weeks before that happens but I can only play it by ear or more appropriately by feel.
