Today I found an answer to a question that has evaded me up to now.

<p>Perhaps some of you were here when I came on board and was wondering about the value of voting when my vote appeared to make no difference.</p>
<p>I called it minnowmath, and wondered if it was being done.</p>

<p>After a small dustup I got an answer, it is.</p>
<p>Well, today I found the webpage, that probably existed all along, that let me know that the minnowmath is happening in the background.</p>

<p>As you can see at the bottom the math got done down to 2 vests.</p>
<p>I didn't see the value of a vest, today, but as long as they get added up, I am happy.</p>

<p>If you vote for somebody, they get the vests associated with your steempower.</p>
<p>Now vests are tiny in value, but any value, received repeatedly, is going to add up at some point.</p>

<p>Were steem to skyrocket those vests would translate to real money.</p>
<p>So, no getting rich, quick, on the steem, but 5 years from now we could be.</p>

Fantastic! Thanks for that link. I'd seen comments elsewhere from smarter people than I am, that this math was being done in the background. According to the quick calculation I just did (assuming it's correct) 2 vests is equal to a reward of .0001437 cents (USD) at present. 
I'm glad this is true and think this needs to be promoted more to encourage new users. I agree with you that any progress is good progress. I think the Steemit interface should show further decimal places or a vests point system on display in addition to USD payouts. 
When people see their post with votes and no payout, they need to know it is not in vain! Likewise, their vote means something to others.
