Lily kicked her feet idly as she sat on a stool at the counter. Her fingers were sticky with sugar and strawberry juice. She licked them happily, humming the tune to Row Row Row Your Boat.

“Grandma?”

“Hmmm?” She asked as she rinsed the carrots in the kitchen sink. 

“Why do you have so many onions hanging from the ceiling?”

“Well, those are from the last time we harvested. Grandpa plucked them from the ground and I braided the stalks. We hang them so that they won't mold.”

Lily picked up the empty bowl and licked the sugar that coated the bottom. 

“Grandma?” she said again, gently setting down the bowl. 

“Yes, my love?”

“Why do you have so many jars of tomatoes on the top shelf up there?” her little finger pointed to the highest point of the kitchen above the refrigerator. 

“Those are the tomatoes we are saving for the winter.”

“When tomatoes won't grow anymore?”

“Yes, exactly right.”

“But the stores will still have tomatoes, right?”

Her Grandma scrunched her face. “Oh they'll have tomatoes all right, but they won't have nearly all the flavor or the vitamins.”

“Vitamins help me grow!” Lily shouted. 

“They certainly do,” her Grandma laughed. “So, when we preserve all of the fruits and vegetables from the summer for the winter, it's our natural remedy to the vitamin problem in the winter.”

“I'm going to eat tomatoes every day, all winter long, for every meal!” she declared. 

“Well that's good because we're eating some tonight for dinner.”

Lily scrunched her tiny face. 

“What's the matter, my love?” 

“I don't like tomatoes.”
