Recently, my school had organised a staff bonding where teachers would need to form their own group with different races, teaching levels, teaching experiences and religions.

As racial harmony is important within my country, schools place great importance of accepting one another’s differences.

In this staff bonding, we were told to select different worship places of different religions. 

Each group member will take turns to explain about his religion as they reach each place of worship.

The overall experience was to confront the sensitive issue and get to know other religions and races better.

Teachers should be the role models of racial harmony and we should treat every student fairly regardless of their races.

This article is going to discuss about some of the things that teachers can do.

#### Different races

It is a fact that every classroom can have different races nowadays.

Generally, most students may not necessarily be able to accept other races readily. Some may even bully them and make rude comments.

As educators, we need to address these issues early. 

Get pupils to see that the world is made up of many different races and all need one another to survive in this competitive world.

Every individual has a part to play in our society regardless of their race. 

Taking a simple example of a car that can have different components but these components can be manufactured in different countries.

Looking at a bigger picture, country does depend on other country for different resources that one may be lacking so we are interdependent.

An isolated island will be lonely as well as lack of the resources needed to progress.

Let students understand that we need one another and racial harmony is important.

#### Religion

Religion is always a sensitive issue even with adults. 

One may say that my religion is better than yours resulting in lots of unnecessary conflicts.

We should discuss and focus on the common factors of different religions rather than keep highlighting the differences to compare which is better.

The truth is almost all religions promote giving to others as well as non-violence. 

Religions encourage us to love one another selflessly and religions have never told us to go against one another.

When you highlight the differences of religions, conflicts would naturally arise.

When you highlight what are the common areas of different religions, you can find even adults have more harmony and acceptance towards one another.

Through your guidance, we can lead pupils to have greater understanding of other religions.

#### Food

When you are unable to get through to your students, I believe food is the universal language that can easily get them to be excited.

Let them see and even taste the different types of delicious food from other races that they have never tasted in their lives.

Through food, students can start to discuss about what they eat at home and get to know food from other races better.

Eating and having a good time definitely bring about greater bonding and harmony.

During my staff bonding, we had to taste food from other races actually. 

We had a good time doing it while getting to know teachers of other races as well.

Racial harmony is never an easy task especially if parents are also negative role models. 

We can be the turning point by getting their children to think right and it will really benefit them for life.

We are not just educators for knowledge but we are character builders.

We can nurture a generation where they can accept the differences of others.
