In many large corporations, there are many standard operation procedures that all employees are to follow.

Standard operation procedures ensure that everyone knows what to do for every situation that each employee may encounter in the course of his/her work.

Each department will have its own standard operation procedures. The whole organisation will have another for the whole company to follow.

<strong>Customer service</strong>

When we give a call to a company nowadays, we would hear an automated message with different extensions to direct us to the relevant department.

The automated message is already the start of a standard operation procedure. 

Another procedure that many customers face is to key in their personal customer’s info for identification even before they get to speak to the operator.

There are times, we need to go from one department to another department because of the standard operation procedures.

Without standard operation procedures, customer service officers may not know the relevant department to refer our cases to.

Standard operation procedures provide a structured category of information for the customer service officers.

<strong>Product/Service certification</strong>

Many companies often want to get their product or service certified to provide quality assurance to customers.

It is especially stricter for those in the food industry due to Ministry of health policies of respective countries.

Many of these certification processes includes documentations, different levels of evaluations and many other procedures before they can be certified.

After certification, companies would require to continue with the required regulations or standard operation procedures and there can even be uninformed spot check for evaluations and appraisals. 

Every company would need to be aware of the standard operation procedures that provide them with a good certification leading to assurance of their products and services.

<strong>Emergency</strong> 

There can be many emergency plans that each company has crafted to cope with different financial or even terrorist attacks that may threaten the company’s business progression.

The head of the company must have a good foresight to plan emergency plans to cope with different situation even for what to do when company fund runs low.

By having these standard contingency plans emplaced, the managers would still be able to carry out the contingency plans in the absence of the head of company.

With good contingency plans, customers can have greater confidence in the company to invest or give their businesses to the company.

In schools, we have standard operation procedures for fire or terrorist attack to ensure everyone knows what to do in times of emergency too.

<strong>In conclusion</strong>

I have only stated some examples of the importance of standard operation procedures. 

Standard operation procedures can help a company to grow but there should be flexibility within the standard operation procedures as there are times when the situation does not fit to any criteria.

I do hope that managers and heads of companies that do read this article can start thinking of what are the standard operation procedures that your companies need.

These standard operation procedures should be in written form.
