As parents and teachers, we can nag all day that they should focus on their studies and not getting themselves into relationship that can be a distraction to learning. We can repeat the same old thing but it may not get into them. The rebellious ones would want to do it more after we keep pestering them about it. It is like everything else does not matter and studies is not important. At their age, friends are more important than anything else. We need to win them over by showing them we can understand. Let them open up to us without threatening them. We can also use good questioning technique to direct their thoughts and decision but we cannot force them to accept our instruction or advice as they would reject them totally. The 21st Century parents and teachers can no longer use the top-down approach as our children demand democracy and liberty due to the influence of social media. Times have changed so the way how our parents handled us may not work for this generation and there may be generation gaps. Getting ourselves to their level and be a friend may be more effective if we really want to guide them more effectively.
