The  last 50 years has a lot to answer for, that's for sure. Superficial over content, more and more.

It has ramped up over this last 20 to. even if you see films from the late 80's - the appearance on screen was _nothing_ like it its now...

A sad indication of people's superficiality, or should I say, a sad indication of people's gullibility.

I'll take  $6 t- shirts anytime.

Well go pack those shirts sir @galenkp. I actually do not worry myself too much about what I wear as long as they are clean and still stitched together. My brother, who is a tailor on the other hand does, so he makes sure I get my clothes updated. 

People seek the physical and material evidence of wealth and health and mostly forget about the mind, the personality and character of the individual. This is great fuel for the consumerist society we live in and brands are cashing in on this. 

The result is people living double lives, pretending to be who or what they are not and getting away with it. When you strip a man of all that he has and all the title that he claims, what remains? 

On steemit, people will flock after an account with huge sp, comment on every post, hoping for an upvote from the whale, orca or dolphin. They do not care about the intent, the personality, the character of the person behind the account. Whether he has not helped a soul in his steemit life does not concern anyone, they just keep flocking like doves waiting for food at the park. 

Recently, I did a contest to support accounts below 100sp. I am watching the comment section avidly. It is piling up, I must say. It seems that we only care about what we can get not what we can give.

The world is full of walking dead people - That’s from a podcast that I listened a while ago. It sounds scary but it’s true.

Haha i am still wearing t shirts i bought about ten years ago they would have been about $6 aswell. Mostly wear them around home etc some have holes in them. They are comfy i like them :)

Nothing like a good old $6 T. I have never been one to obsess over possessions (funnily enough my name is also Harry haha) and have read before that wanting more leads to much *less* satisfaction.

I think in a society fuelled by materialism some of us are starting to wake up to the ways in which  marketing company and some forms of media push the idea that riches = success upon us so as to continue to fuel the machine of buy more and appreciate less.

Great write up mate. Did you end up having a drive of the car?

Capitalism can take a lot of the blame for some of this. Capitalism upheld by a government who don't represent the people.

They didn't make a new model every year for cars back in the day until someone realised they could sell more cars if they made people feel out of date. 

You mentioned phones, I don't know if that's a great example because newer phones aren't just superficial different. Well some times they are.

It's a head-shaking-kind-of-world @galenkp.  That entire mentality is something I do not miss from Vancouver and have to say I don't notice the same here in Mexico.  It's a refreshing change, although I'm sure I'm just not seeing it :)

I had a girl once say to me in Vancouver, "I really like you!  And just so you know, I only like pretty girls".  Speaking of wft?  She was such a dum dum.

Yeah its a generational thing, Marketing has an awful lot to answer for.  My Dad liked to look smart, liked the family to have decent things, but for sure he wasnt discarding something just because it was 'not-new'.

My Dad was an engineer, and if he took some rubbish to the dump (what we now call a recycling centre) he would often come back with something he thought he could fix up, for some reason it always seemed to be a lawn mower or a moped!  My Dad saw the real value in things, things that with just a couple of minor tweaks, and with parts he just had laying around, could be given a new lease of life.  I think in some sense he knew how hard it was to make products, and to him it seemed like a travesty to just discard all that hard work.

It just struck me; Wow, I miss my Dad.  But I have picked that trait up from him to some extent, I dont like being wasteful.

Man, you write some great stuff and makes me think we were suppose to meet on this platform as I have often thought that I might be alone in this many things. Your shirts are new, I've had lots of mine some 8 years and also bought them real cheap and by the dozens, the more there are the less they wear through. Same for my jeans. About the only clothing pieces I spend good money are shoes, belts, one jacket and socks, the rest are no name brand and must just fit well.

I really couldn't care less who likes me and who doesn't, I have to be able to live with myself at the end of it all so my approval is the first one to look out for. I look for real people to connect with, to listen to and share with, to build that community with. My father raised me to grab on to all that money cannot buy as that is all you can take with you when your time is up. 

No one can make one a better person, but one self and that only happens when you let go of the labels and start hearing the truth about first yourself. 

Don't stress there you $6 T-Shirt wearing mofo, I got your back on this one. Keep it real

I dream of the day we can all feel comfortable wearing t-shirts and jeans. I was at a conference recently where I knew I should wear dress clothes, and did for my presentation there, but other days stayed in a t-shirt and jeans. It was then I realized the hierarchy of how people dress and how, when dressed expensively enough you can appear to be someone you are not. How we dress is a form of communication that is unfortunately tied to our wallets.

The very impressive brother and the most important thing that we carry inside  our heart and the flow of his words are wise and are coupled to reality, thank you for your publication
