The Nostalgia and the Bugs – Gaming was so much harder back then

Seeing everyone complaining about just how difficult Dark Souls and Super Meat Boy are makes me giggle like a little girl. Well, obviously you need some context to this, as it may come out as a somewhat arrogant and idiotic observation – those are extremely difficult games, indeed.

But decades ago, things were really difficult. Playing a game from start to finish with three lives and no continues, even getting the tapes or the discs to work (legend says that complete silence helped with the loading) was an arduous task in itself.

I recall a lot of situations from a distant time when cell phones seemed like things straight out of science-fiction movies. There was no internet, and consequently no Facebook, no friends list (only if you did it on paper), all multiplayer was local (and a heck of fun) and all those things that we take for granted nowadays.

![hook amiga 2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVTELjFxiwkdnri7oyfyhN9RjVn3e2x955vHvrARdJ5uJ/hook%20amiga%202.jpg)

It was hard being a gamer back then

So hard. I used to walk nearly one hour every other day to the house of a buddy and spend the afternoon playing games – I didn’t skip school, it was only during the times when I had no classes, in case you’re wondering. Worst thing was that sometimes, I wasn’t even sure if he was home at the time – phone calls were expensive back then and our parents had a tight leash on the bill. Imagine doing that nowadays, walking for almost an hour to play a few games with your friends. Seems unlikely, right? Different times.

But those were fun times. There was a special feeling of achievement when you finished a particularly challenging game. A point and click adventure game, for example, as walkthroughs were mostly inexistent back then – remember that there was no Internet, and the few magazines that published full solutions would usually have a delay of at least two or three months.

I remember Hook, the adventure game developed by Ocean and based on the motion picture by Steven Spielberg. This was 1992, on the Commodore Amiga, and we had this challenge to see who would finish adventure games first. Some days we would call one another to check on our progress, and just as we got stuck in a particular puzzle – not usual, but it happened –, there was a bit of mockery going around.

![hook amiga.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPvQ8ERuJKyGgeE4LyJK8k815yihEjLuVAAWxVzhtesMU/hook%20amiga.jpg)

However, this one was memorable, because the puzzle involved getting three mugs, if I recall correctly. I could find two of them, but for the life of me, the third was nowhere to be found. After a lot of persevering, I gave up and asked my buddy just where he found the third mug. As it turns out, it was sitting right there in a table that I crossed dozens of times. So, what happened?

It was a bug. A mug-disappearing bug. I was banging my head on the wall for days because of a freaking bug. In a day and age where quality assurance was far from ideal, bugs were commonplace, but game-breaking bugs were a bit harder to find. Needless to say, I felt cheated.

![darkmere.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWAix5ZVt9su5RcpmQM8iCn16gGgMrCZ6ajCsZL9XfQkb/darkmere.jpg)

A bug a day will tear your hair away

Another case of the buggies happened with Darkmere, an isometric action RPG developed by Core Design – you know, the ones that later created Tomb Raider and nearly drowned in a pile of cash. A challenging game with elements of adventure, it looked great for its time – the year was 1993 – and we obviously wanted to see it to the end. Oddly enough, what stumped us wasn’t a lack of save system, as there was one set in place; however, it didn’t work in our version, no matter how hard we tried.

So, we cracked our knuckles and decided to play for hours until we discovered the solution to the puzzles, dying repeatedly and restarting right after. Many wasted afternoons later, we managed to finish the village, which happened to be the first of three “worlds”. I don’t recall the details, but this village takes nearly two hours to beat if you know what you are doing and don’t die in combat – it was hard, even more considering that the fights were the weakest part of the game.

It was kind of a shock to discover that another huge level set in the forest was waiting for us, and no matter how hard we fought, we didn’t manage to finish this one. We also gave up due to another very important reason: the Amiga’s power supply was heating so much that we had to use a fan to cool it down, and still it felt like a fire hazard waiting to happen.

Darkmere beat us, but it was thanks to a low blow.

![speedball 2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXzaQQCJ9YWjx7e2Y2tE5nCZVmNwwJScksvcsAuKMs6Po/speedball%202.jpg)

Let’s not talk about Project X, Never

These are only a few of my nostalgic moments, but I have so many more. Let’s make one thing clear right now: gaming wasn’t better back then, unless you look at those times through rose-tinted glasses. It surely wasn’t worst as well; it was just *different*. I lost count to the days, weeks, months that I spent in multiplayer sessions with games such as Dyna Blaster, Kick Off 2, Sensible Soccer or Speedball 2, and the amazing new world of graphical adventures that was a wonder to explore, from Monkey Island to Beneath a Steel Sky.

I’m extremely happy with what the video games industry delivers nowadays. There are platforms for everyone, games for every taste, and even an impressive indie scene that delivers the experiences that big-budget studios are afraid to create. There is an amateur scene that suddenly creates stunning content – mods, fan remakes… - and when you look at your library, I’m pretty sure that unplayed games are just piling up, waiting for the right time that never seems to come.

Those were wonderful times and I’ll always cherish them, having grown through exciting days and seeing the rise of the PC and consoles such as the PlayStation and the Xbox. If there’s one bad thing that the Internet led to, it was certainly the “death” of local co-op as we knew it, in favor of the more impersonal, unfriendly online gaming that we know today. Back then, we competed for fun and laughs; now, it’s for leaderboards and virtual bragging, with an unhealthy amount of insults and cheap tactics thrown into the mix.

Oh, and back then we didn’t have online trolls. Damn, those are annoying.

I remember those days of walking over to a friends to play a video game in person with him. I was lucky most of the times the friend lived a block away. Gaming these days seems to be missing that human element. That split screen adventure, getting Nintendo thumb and having to admit defeat by passing the control over to your friend as you just could not beat a level in a game and then he would fail as well.

That is one of the thing I use to really love back then about gaming. These days I just don’t have the time for a game to be totally brutal and hard to the point you just want to base your head on the wall while you fail a dozen times. Have to take step back and try again a few more times.

When I was younger I use to be in a raiding guild. It could take us weeks to months to defeat something for the first. We normally where first ones on the server to beat it as well. Most time we struggle even the coming weeks to get it down again. Every time we get something hard down that we struggled with Ventrilo would light up and everyone would be screaming so loud at 3 am out of joy it wake everyone up in the house you were in. Over the years when they started to make things easier as the player based died those screams turned into “yays” and then silence.

Exactly. Nowadays those feelings are lost. It's colder, a more isolated activity. I used to play computer games back then and still we played football/soccer outside, nearly everyday after school, either on the streets or the park. Now, we barely see kids outside playing anything, skating or riding bicycles, they are all inside "playing PlayStation" (it's funny because those older who don't know any better say "playing PlayStation" instead of "playing console", because they don't know more than that).

I forgot to mention that I used to draw maps of games and send them to a popular newspaper that used to have a video games section. I was extremely popular in that regard (they even made a Sensible Soccer contest and mentioned me on stage :D ), and it took a lot of work, but it was fun. Those were the only sources for maps and cheats back then.

I don't like difficult games as in Dark Souls or Cuphead. I want to experience an adventure, not to lose and replay 20 times the same section over and over again. For me, videogames aren't a sport, they are an escape and a fun distraction. Give me a Life is Strange or an Inside over Dark Souls anytime.

"Ice cream, Ice cream". Speedball two was one of my favourites. There was nothing more satisfying than using the action replay cartridge to whack all your stats up to 99 and absolutely destroying the opposition.

You can't beat a bit of Treasure Island Dizzy. Not sure if you were a speccy or C64 user, but that game was HARD. Death was really death, and you could only carry 3 items at once (which i still think is generous for an egg with arms). I am trying to work out what exactly to revisit as part of this tag.

Speedball 2 was awesome, one of the greatest multiplayer games ever. All those tackles, the electrified ball, and of course the wonderful sound of the Ice Cream man... This is what gaming is all about.

I'm a Spectrum guy as well. Played a bit of Dizzy, can't remember which ones, as well as other devilish games such as Head Over Heels, Back to Skool, The Great Escape, and of course, plenty of stuff from Ultimate.

Ocean, Ultimate, Codemasters... Anything from these guys was a must-play back then.

Great article! I agree that gaming in those days wasn't necessarily better or worse, but different. And although developers in back then absolutely designed around difficulty is wasn't always quite as curated as it is today.

I think what absolutely made games of that era so difficult was the lack of upfront information and of course the occasional "undocumented" bug. Devs like FromSoftware try to mimic this with games like Dark Souls but with the advent of the internet, even the dark and mysterious depths of Lordran have been cracked open and exposed to the world. Making playing the game from start to finish much easier.

Keep up the great work!!

I agree, the lack of info on a game (despite the massive manuals that I loved to have in the games' huge boxes) was one of the key elements. Nowadays, even the hardest games like Dark Souls can be completed without taking a single hit, which says a lot about the mechanical design and the inherent flaws.

It was every man for himself, now we have guides and exploits for every game.

Hook was one of the few games my parents actually bought for me. Maybe the only one. For my eleventh birthday.

It was so hard, although my mum solved a few of the puzzles just by popping her head round the door...

But I got so stuck that I begged them to exchange it for another game. Luckily, our neighbour was the manager of the store where it came from, so he let me exchange it for... Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension. It was a boring game—a shameless advert for Chupa-Chups, but it did come with a big poster for my room.

A couple of years ago I played Hook again and used walkthroughs a little, just to get quick closure. But I now wonder if my original game was broken. I can’t remember where I got stuck, but I have always regretted exchanging it. Giving up and begging for a different game.

Now maybe I have true closure...

I can't remember if the game was hard - most adventure games back then had some pretty crazy puzzles -, but bugs were commonplace back then. I knew because I could compare most games with my friends.

Puzzle-solving mum, eh? That's a rare kind :)

Glad you got closure, maybe your game was really bugged. :)

It was something, wasn't it? Playing on green monochrome monitor PCs at a friend's house and in a few years, it's CD-ROM, Myst and other unbelievable stuff.

Amazing post my dude. I always fear i'm suffering a _good old game breaking bug_ whenever I don't find an immediate solution to a puzzle or whatever thing i'm doing because I've been through quite of those, lol.

Wish I were here earlier to read your post on time but keep it up, mang!

Thanks pal! I guess we all come to a point where we blame the game, but it's not always the game's fault xD
