<p><em>Staphylococcus</em> are a strain of bacteria; there are 30 types of staph, and <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em> is the most common. These bacteria can live on the skin of human beings. To anyone with a healthy immune system, the bacteria is no threat. When the immune system is compromised, conditions are ripe for a staph infection to wreak havoc on the system.</p>

In traditional western medicine, penicillin was prescribed for staph infections. As the bacteria mutated, more powerful antibiotics were prescribed. Some strains of staph have developed resistance to these stronger antibiotics, and these MRSA infections (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) are even harder to treat. </p>
