<p>Hello guys. Everyone loves sea. It makes us happy and gives unforgettable emotions. But not so long ago great, powerful and deadly dangerous ships were swimming in our lovely seas. The main tasks of these ships were to make death and destroying. So, about these knights of the sea I want to tell you something interesting. Battleship – the greatest ship, the pride of a fleet. It has thick armor and the biggest cannons. It is like a swimming castle. And today I want to tell you about the biggest battleships of World War II. </p>
<p><blockquote>Всем привет! Все мы безумно любим море. Оно дарит нам счастье и радость, загар и здоровье. Но еще совсем недавно по морям и океанам плавали поистине стальные чудовища, задачей которых было сеять смерть и разрушения. Об этих рыцарях моря я и хотел бы вам сегодня рассказать. Линкоры – самые большие корабли, гордость флота. Обладающие толстенной броней и мощнейшими орудиями. Способные выдержать огромное количество попаданий, пережить бомбардировку и торпедирование. Плавучие крепости. И сегодня я поведаю вам о трех самых больших и значимых линкорах, принимавших участие во Второй Мировой Войне. </blockquote></p>

<h2><strong>USS Missouri (BB-63), линкор “Миссури” </strong></h2>

<p>Let’s start with the pride of USA fleet – battleship “Missouri”. It was built in 1944 and during the 50 years it was a symbol of a fleet. In 1998 it was rebuilt to the sea-museum. At the deck of this monster was signed the capitulation act of Japan. Americans decided to make a real armored ship. Armor plates of gun cellars and gun towers were 150mm with big slope. From sides there were thick plates of 300 mm steel, which provides good anti-torpedo defense. </p>

<p>Fire power of “Missouri” was awesome! Nine 406 mm cannons in three towers could destroy enemies from 32 km. The weight of each shell was 1220 kg. Also there were 20 good 127 mm cannons and a lot of air-defense guns. Engine of this battleship had 212 000 HP and could provide high speed 32 knots. But maneuverability was not very fine. Also Missouri had 4 airplanes. Total amount of crew was near 2800 men. Displacement of “Missouri” – 57 000 tons. </p>

<p><blockquote>Начнем с гордости американского флота – линкора Миссури. В 1944 году линкор был спущен на воду, на протяжении 50 лет он был символом флота США, а уже в 1998 он стал частью музея. Именно на палубе этого гиганта был подписан Акт о капитуляции Японии. Американцы основательно подошли к вопросу бронирования линкора. Броня орудийных погребов и башенных орудий была 15 сантиметров под большим наклоном. А по бокам линкора находились стальные пластины, которые постепенно уходили вглубь корабля, и за счет угла наклона толщина достигала 30 сантиметров. Также корабль имел отличную противоторпедную защиту. </blockquote></p>
<p><blockquote>Огневая мощь Миссури была невероятной! Девять 406мм орудий, расположенных в трех башнях могли вести огонь на 32 км. Каждый снаряд весил по 1220 кг. Также на линкоре стояли 127мм орудия в количестве 20 штук и множество орудий ПВО. Не сложно догадаться, что такая махина была слегка неповоротлива. Силовая установка обеспечивала 212 000лошадиных сил и позволяла набрать скорость в 32 узла. Маневренность оставляла желать лучшего. Но давайте не будем забывать, что в первую очередь линкор был своеобразной плавучей крепостью. И кстати, Миссури обладал собственными самолетами в количестве 4 штук. На корабле несло службу около 2800 человек. Водоизмещение Миссури – 57 000 тонн. </blockquote></p>

<h2><strong>IJN Yamato, линкор “Ямато”</strong></h2>

<p>Next in importance was the Japanese battleship “Yamato”. Perhaps everyone heard about it at least once in their life. “Yamato” was the pride of the Imperial Fleet. The Japanese command was very valued about it and was not hurry to throw it to a battle, trying to reserve it for a general engagement. As a result, “Yamato” did not took part in really big fighting. It participated only in small battles. Ship was destroyed after the explosions of cannon cellar after getting numerous American bombs and torpedoes in 1945. </p>
<p>When we talk about “Yamato”, we primarily have in mind his amazing armor thickness. Thick 410 mm armor plates formed a citadel which protected main vitals of the ship and takes about 53% of the entire ship. Turrets armor had 610 mm thick. In theory, hit such boards was almost impossible. However, the quality of the steel was bad due to outdated technology. </p>

<p>As for firepower, the main cannons of Yamato were nine 460 mm guns. Also there were additional guns caliber 155 and 127 mm. Also “Yamato” had some air-defense guns (which, however, were not enough). The engine of the battleship was old and betrayed only 165,000 horsepower. The ship can develop a speed of 27 knots. On this battleship actively used steam engines. “Yamato” displacement was 72 800 tons. “Yamato” was a grand and dangerous machine, but it was technically outdated. </p>

Командование очень ценило линкор и не спешило бросать его в бой, стараясь всеми силами приберечь его для генерального сражения. В итоге Ямато так и не успел толком повоевать, поучаствовав лишь в небольших сражениях. Затонул корабль из-за взрывов орудийных погребов после попадания многочисленных американских бомб и торпед в 1945 году. </blockquote></p>
<p><blockquote>Когда мы говорим про Ямато, мы в первую очередь имеем в виду потрясающую своей толщиной броню. <p>And finally, it should be noted the handsome German ship – battleship ”Bismarck”. The flagship of the German navy, it was perfectly balanced ship. The designers were able to successfully combine incredible firepower, strong armor and good drive ability characteristics. Initially “Bismarck” planned to build on the schemes of “pocket battleship”. Bismarck's displacement was 50 900 tons. The ship was destroyed in an unequal heroic battle with the British fleet. Before death “Bismarck” destroyed British battleship “The Hood” and significantly damaging other ships. “Bismarck” went under water with a raised flag. </p>

Конструкторы смогли удачно объединить невероятную огневую мощь, крепкое бронирование и хорошие ходовые характеристики. Изначально Бисмарк планировали построить по схемам так называемых Карманных Линкоров. Это было обусловлено некоторыми ограничениями Версальских договоренностей. Great post! I especially love using Google Translate to read part of it. I guess because I was shortly after the war and had many uncles (all gone now) who fought in it, I have always found the subject very interesting. Battleships along with fighter aircraft are instruments of war that have changed dramatically - missiles of course made both obsolete. 

I had an uncle - Terrell Thomas - who was a sailor captured in the very early stages of WWII during the battle of Java who spent 447 days in captivity only to die a couple of months before the war ended and his camp was liberated!
