However, there is a changing perception of leadership in the Charisma and expertise world today. No longer is leadership viewed as a combination of charima possessed only by a few people at the top of an organizational pyramid. Now, leadership is viewed as the challenge to and responsibility of every individual with the potential to make a difference. Increasingly, the modern leader is becoming a teaΕ facilitator, coach, mentor, advocate, motivator and surrogate father/mother. Though, most people still see leadership in terms of the physical prowess, skills and competence of an individual, better parameters for locating the true worth of leadership can be found in the interrelations between the situation and the task to be accomplished. Thus, for the meaningful interpretation of leadership, four basic elements have to be considered. They are * The Leader: This includes the skills and abilities, personality and authority of the individual * The Follower: The followers constitute a vital element of leadership because there will be no leader without the people to lead. Dale Carnegie (1936), one of the foremost leadership experts of his time, defines leadership as 'the ability to help people achieve what they are capable of, to establish a vision for the future; to encourage, to coach and to mentor; and to establish and maintain successful relationship.' Collin Powell, when he was the chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States Armed forces, defined leadership as 'the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible.' George Manning and Ken Curtis (2003), authors and leadership teachers, describe leadership as social influence. To them, it means leaving a mark. It is initiating and guiding, and the result is change i.e. a new character or direction that, otherwise would never be. Thus, in simple terms, leadership focuses on relationship and how it manipulated to achieve desired goals. It is the process by which an individual directs, guides, encourages and in goals. It is the opportunity and ability to lead. It can be given to someone (through election, appointment or selection) or it can be forcefully taken (through coups fluences a group of people to choose and achieve desired violence, war, usurpation etc)
