Hermes Trismegistus is considered the author of many tracts that are the basis for Hermeticism, which is actually like a handbook of metaphysics the way I see it.

Now many people consider Hermes a derivation of the Egyptian god Toth and the Greek god Hermes, who were somehow joined long ago because they bear certain similar characteristics.

Now considering what I have read, and also figuring in that I don’t believe in either an Egyptian or a Greek pantheon, better said I don’t believe in any of these gods, I take it this idea is wrong.

To me if Hermes existed he was a real person not a god, perhaps immortal, perhaps not, certainly very wise, wise beyond anything that was known at that time, consider this was before the pyramids that means he was on earth thousands of years ago. This according to many arcane books I have read.

Now let’s get one thing clear, I respect these books and the ideas that are in them, in no way does it mean I am sure they are true or not. It is like the bible, I have no doubt many of the things that are written in it did happen, but I also think some things are exaggerated and others are the very cunning ideas of some smart people and their ways to control others, this I think applies to any religious book.

Now Hermetic books do not seek control, they just present an idea of how things really are, if you do get to read any of these books you will see they are very interesting, you do have to read with an open mind because some of the things written in these books are not even close to the majority of the great religions teachings. You have to see if what is read is logical or even possible and try to get the best out of it. 

Remember nobody owns the truth and we are all just passengers in this thing called life, everyone wants to know what happens afterwards, of course this is easy to answer, you either continue living as a spiritual being or you just cease to exist, nobody can prove what does happen all is just ideas neither atheists or religious people KNOW what happens, we just have an idea and rely on it.

My Dad used to say look, once you are dead that is it, you are no longer anything just an organic body that ends up decomposing until very little is left, but you as a being no longer exist. That was his idea I would like to think there is more to it than that, perhaps we do continue living in some spiritual form but you won’t know this until the time comes.

Anyway back to Hermes here are some of the texts attributed to him (of course these were not actually written by him they are copies of what is supposed to have been his teachings) and which I can assure you are very interesting reads:

The Emerald Tablet of Hermes 
Lament of Hermes

And then there are a lot of other books that try to explain his philosophy, somehow I think the Kybalion is the best one out there, it is a good read and short enough to not bore you and maybe it could whet your appetite about this.
