A Morning In Moscow (Idaho!)

A Farmer's Market Foray

One nice little diversion during last weekend's trip to Pullman to visit my nephew was a trip to the Moscow Farmer's Market. As we were driving through the wheat fields from Pullman to Moscow, I caught myself ruminating on what Moscow, Russia's farmer's market(s) must be like? Instead of procuring a tasty breakfast burrito to nosh on I wonder what the locals grab for a farmer's market snack as they walk around looking at all the locally produced goods.

![IMG_7543 (2).JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQUybi1Zn8vuSPwzj2Vvt31tsGiw4RJVdH9u2RFV13rUo/IMG_7543%20(2).JPG)

My thoughts on the subject evaporated as soon as we drove past all the many popup booths lining the streets of downtown Moscow, Idaho. I'm rather fond of the small agricultural burg that is home to the University of Idaho. My daughter plans on attending that super excellent college and majoring in some aspect of agriculture. I am not sad about this future plan, her being there just gives me another excuse to wander down and around the town.

![IMG_7544 (2).JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUy5yQd8WWSwHU31u3VBLgkBKptAHZ7kHCi4zUBvSsf9s/IMG_7544%20(2).JPG)

The market itself sprawls over a few streets and the place was packed with people. As Moscow and Pullman are within rock throwing distance to each other, many of the attendees were college students, and lots of them were from all over the globe. I heard multiple explanations of *"Oh I want to try that!"* joy uttered in many different languages. It's super cool to be standing in an old farm town and be surrounded by all manner of cultures.

![IMG_7551 (2).JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaMvdHUCNRUC8PHXNvnxHPvKBweNq4fXWFJJCVYuy3Cw3/IMG_7551%20(2).JPG)

The first thing my nephew wanted to do was grab a breakfast burrito and a mango lemonade. Of course I was game with that desire, as it involved food. We went up to this taco truck and got the best breakfast burrito I have had in years. It was stuffed with chorizo, eggs, peppers, and fried hash brown chunks. They had squeeze bottles of green and red sauce to adorn your burritos with. My nephew said, *"Be careful with the red, it's hot."* I drowned my burrito in the red sauce, and to my surprise it was a teensy bit warm. I was so proud of my Palouse dwelling Idahoans for putting a little heat in that sauce, most of the so-called *"hot"* things in these parts are barely warmer than ketchup. Sigh.

![IMG_7548.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaTZwW4upvVJSGAwqGKwv2jCXXLZQMdjRAq3ouLGRzLL5/IMG_7548.JPG)

Moving on, my dear hummingbird of a nephew wanted to buy me some flowers. I worked that situation well and ended up buying both he and my daughter some. He got me back a short while later when I found a creamery selling artisan cheeses. I share the same passion as Wallace from *Wallace and Grommit.* *"I love cheese!"* The lovely ladies running the booth of Brush Creek Creamery were handing out samples.

*"Would you like to try a sample of the marinated labneh?"* a woman in a blue apron inquired.

Would I ever!!! Soon I was emitting a euphoric sigh as I chewed on a cucumber slice that had been dipped in the most excellent garlic oil infused labneh. We then tried some smoked gouda and my all time favorite, a brie that had a caramelized brown sugar crust torched onto the top. I was coming around to the idea of maybe moving into an unused corner of the creamery when my nephew suddenly bought me a whole assortment of the cheeses. My mouth hung open in the shape of a mooing cow's maw.

![IMG_7550 (2).JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWrcsJ8Le8dsZ28BX6WsqfTgJKT3mF8WxocaQv8Yjua1A/IMG_7550%20(2).JPG)

He then took my in full cheese rich shocked form to another booth ran by a girl he knew. She sells all manner of goat milk cosmetic and beauty products that she produces on her small farm, and before long I had some delightful face cream to add to my cheese collection. At this point my nephew and I were at a purchases draw, I had bought breakfast and the bouquets, he had blessed me with the cheese and the face cream. Gift scale balanced, we continued through the market and enjoyed the sights.

![IMG_7549 (2).JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPHAYgkHLvP8V8LHpJkGfSCSd9QfUoX9sxkgJ5bRgxc28/IMG_7549%20(2).JPG)

And what a rich tapestry of hand crafted and produced creations there were to gaze upon! The artist that painstakingly crafted all manner of Star Wars art caught my eye, as did the hand carved wooden kitchen utensils. The market had an abundance of fresh produce, and my nephew giggled at my big eyed awe more than once. But come on, who doesn't love a garlic braid?

![IMG_7547 (2).JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmR2Cf3Yj4ubRCnBETTBRkZyhFVwgnFxmSw4zPPzshFkKZ/IMG_7547%20(2).JPG)

One thing that really struck me was the prices of meat per pound. I raise most of what we consume, so I haven't had to buy meat in a long time, but honestly, I about passed out when I saw regular old locker beef was $6/lb, not to mention 1lb of lamb sausage was $15. Now, I understand that in the US we have an abundance, and as a farmer I am well aware of the fact that most consumers don't understand what the actual cost of producing food is, but talk about a bit of sticker shock. Two years ago I about had a guilt coronary when I had to charge my friend $2.75/lb for the hog I raised them, but that was basically what the cost was to raise it, not counting the labor involved. Let's just say that my farmer's market visit ended with a bit of economics musing.

![IMG_7545 (2).JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXGh7wwacuhTMqg7kgmHrcMKAjHHqNsEgWB1Hap21zraG/IMG_7545%20(2).JPG)

All in all though, I love, love, love the Moscow Farmer's market! It is such a fun place to wander through, and there are more than enough vendors to keep things interesting.

I have been haughtily informed on numerous occasions that it is "coh" not "cow", something that I find infinitely amusing as the town's name had to be derived from the original Moscow. Then again, we PNW's have a way of putting our own spin on things, so who am I to judge lol lol!

@ferrate ·
Such a lovely mornings, you guys have in Moscow. Cool environment with awesome scenes. Mostly i pictured Moscow as a place where there was always a snow to fall even in summer...lol
But your blog have really changed that thinking today.
I really enjoyed your blog and the pictures in there were amazing. Good job and keep the writing sprite up.

On a second note, i happen to see that you lack information on how the new steem has brought great deals on the blockchain. Now we have what we call tribes on the blockchain, and these tribes allows you to earn what we call tribe tokens aside the normal steem you earn on your blogs. Thank you so much @ferrate for all the information regarding new steem and tribes. I fully admit that I have been absent a lot this year and am not as up to date on all the new developments as I should be. I'll definitely take a look at all that you have shared.

And I was in Moscow, Idaho in the US, a place that does indeed get a bit of snow and was probably named after Moscow, Russia. Thank you so much for your kind words, I am glad that you enjoyed everything:)

It's funny but I thought that you were talking about Moscow in Russia. But when you mentioned Pullman I was a little bit surprised as such name doesn't sound Russian at all, lol :D

It looks like an interesting market. I would definitely get some flowers from that stand too!

Thank you for sharing and have a lovely weekend!

Ha ha! That's why I threw the Idaho part in the parentheses in the title, I figured most people had never heard of Moscow, Idaho.

There were so many incredible flowers at that market that it was hard to choose just one bouquet.

Thank you so much for dropping by and I hope you have a smashing weekend too!

Hi @generika
Enjoy your walk in the market a lot.
I love cheeses too, that sounds great; "A Brie that had a caramelized brown sugar crust torched onto the top."
Something from another world!
Everything is great, thanks for sharing.
Congrats on a Curie vote!
