approach to tackling the zillions of health problems that have been plaguing
*Homo sapiens* from time immemorial. But in reality and from a scientific point
of view, it is close to an impossibility. The rule of 'division of labour as a
driver of efficiency' (or should I say the law of comparative advantage?) is
not only applicable in economics but also in the treatment of diseases.<o:p></o:p></span><u1:p></u1:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 7.5pt; text-align: justify; line-height: 15.95pt;"><span style="font-size: 1rem;"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Be that as it may, people believe in whatever they want and a lot
of times, these beliefs usually work for them. The popular saying that 'man is
a product of his thoughts' might not be entirely true but it does have an
element of truth in it. On a more personal note, I have come across people who
believe that taking water early in the morning (aka water therapy) can prevent
all forms of diseases. Either coincidentally or due to placebo effects, these

continued to evolve with every passage of time. In the same vein, through
continuous scientific research and discoveries, drugs used in the treatment of
these pathogenic diseases have also and continued to evolve along accordingly.
In all these, getting a drug for the treatment of viral infections remains a
cul-de-sac assignment for drug researchers. Although there is no ruling out a
headway in the nearest future, as the time this write-up is being put together,
the status quo remains.<o:p></o:p></span><u1:p></u1:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 7.5pt; text-align: justify; line-height: 15.95pt;"><u1:p><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">&nbsp;</span></u1:p><span style="font-size: 1rem;">That no known drug currently exists
in the market for the treatment of viral infections ipso facto contributed to
my surprise when I saw a comment from a social polling application a few days
ago citing the efficacy of colloidal silver in the treatment of viral
infections.&nbsp; Some even went as far as implicating the substance in the
treatment of the dreaded Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Could this be true or is

silver is a combination of two words - colloid and silver.&nbsp; According to
Graham (1961), colloid or colloidal solution is an intermediate between a true
solution in which the solute particles which are less than 1 nm in size are
homogeneously dissolved in the solvent and a suspended solution or suspension
in which the solute particles within the solution are bigger than 1000 nm in
size.<o:p></o:p></span><u1:p></u1:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 7.5pt; text-align: justify; line-height: 15.95pt;"><u1:p><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">&nbsp;</span></u1:p><span style="font-size: 1rem;">Silver, on the other hand,
represents one of the over one hundred known chemical elements in the world. It
has a Latin name known as *Argentum* from where it derived the chemical symbol
"Ag" as it is represented in the periodic table with atomic number
47. back to eons of years ago before the discovery of drugs in Han Dynasty in
China, ancient Greece and Egypt. Its use back then includes disinfection and
sanitation of water as well as wound healings. While modern science
corroborates some of the claims of colloidal silver's effectiveness against
certain microbes, it is not as it is been often touted by pseudo-science

deliberately choose to be ignorant despite series of education and seas of
information available to them and where corporations will do anything to keep
the profit flowing.&nbsp; Hence, it is not uncommon to see silver-containing
products being marketed and used with bogus claims of their effectiveness

effects of topically applied silver-containing compounds, the same cannot be
said for those taking through oral routes. In actual fact, it has specifically
been reported that the substance has no known benefits or functions when taken
orally. On the contrary, the accumulation of silver in the human body has been
known to cause a permanent form of skin discolouration, a phenomenon known as

be there for colloidal silver to be a solution to some pathogenic diseases but
a lot still needs to be done in terms of research to ascertain its effectiveness,
modes of operations and safety of use. Most of the narratives being claimed by
manufacturers of silver-containing products need to be scientifically evaluated

I've always heard of people using colloidal silver as an antimicrobial, but I also  remember reading about the blue people in Kentucky (I think). It's definitely an interesting topic!

This is quite an entrenched belief in some communities.  I know personally two families where the children are regularly dosed with colloidal silver and the parents cannot be dissuaded from this regimen.  The suspicion of a government and pharmaceutical alliance is strong.  Unfortunately, that suspicion has some basis in fact.  It is a suspicion that also fuels the anti-vaccine movement.
